Our charter member Leslie Tanimoto passed away

 
"Leslie Toshiaki Tanimoto, 84, of Hilo died April 26 at home. Born in Papaikou, he was the retired owner of Les T. Corp., American Vending &Amusements, Wizards World and Mulligans Island Amusement Centers, managed the former Hilo Lanes, where he helped start the Hilo Junior Bowlers league, was a former member of Hilo Bay Rotary Club and a U.S. Army veteran. Internment at Homelani Memorial Park. Survived by daughters, Col. Laura (David) Wheeler of Springfield, Va., and Rebekah (Yeung) Lam of Los Angeles; son-in-law, Jason Hashimoto of Hilo; brother, Lawrence (Somai) Tanimoto of Kurtistown; sisters, Mildred Tahara of Oahu and Edna (Bob) Nowaki of Hilo; a granddaughter and a great-grandson. Arrangements by Ballard Family Mortuary. "

RCHB Community Grant

  • The club is ready to spend up to $7,500 during the current Rotary year (until June 30, 2020) for community support and COVID-19 disaster relief.

  • Please submit your grant applications to Chester Cabral no later than May 18 if you want the selection at the board meeting on May 20. The grant applications will be selected at the BOD meeting on May 20. Urgent requests may be discussed and selected before May 20.

Rotary Club of South Hilo accepts applications for the grants

  • South Hilo's Rotary club foundation has decided to make an award of $20,000 to non-profit organizations who have been adversely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.  The attached RFP will fund requests of up to $5,000 but our priority is to respond to as many requests at this time where funding is desperately needed.
  • The application has been shortened to allow a quick response as we hope to start awarding funds by the middle of May. Contact Benson Medina at rcshnews@gmail.com.

Guest Speaker - Sara Cunningham

  • ABSTRACT: The UK exited the EU on 31 January 2020 just as COVID-19 commenced its insidious reach into Europe. This talk will consider the impacts of Brexit on the UK's response to the pandemic and how the pandemic may derail the UK's timetable for an end to the Brexit transition period. 
  • BIO: Sara Cunningham is the daughter of Richard and Michelle Cunningham. She grew up in Hilo and attended Hilo Union, Hilo Intermediate and Hilo High before going on to graduate from Brown University with honors and receive a Masters in Financial Regulation from the London School of Economics. Currently, Sara is the Head of European Regulatory and Compliance for Tetragon, an investment firm based in London.
