Uganda Orthopedic Surgical Sport Injury ProgramA presentation by Jo-ann Bateman and Jack Taunton to tell us about the work that they and others are doing in Uganda. In May 2017 they and their team from UBC set out to help with those suffering from sports injuries in Uganda. Supported by donations of shoes and therapeutic aids the team was able to not only relieve the suffering of these athletes but at the same time educate the medical staff on site. Dr Taunton a world renowned surgeon and athlete himself, is now looking for sponsorship in the hope that this work can be repeated in the future. |

After the general meeting there was a short business meeting to keep Don up to date with what we are doing, proposing to do, in our club. Meeting notes 25 July 2017Today we were privileged to have Sean Graham introduce Calvin Helin as our speaker. Calvin is a member of the Tsimshian First Nations who just happens to have Sean as his chiropractor. Calvin first recounted the story of his upbringing, his rather varied education and his failed attempts to become a fisherman in Steveston! His journey from this uneasy start to where he is now is a story in itself but he his more than a story teller. He is a man with a passion. His aim is to bring hope and understanding to his Nation and to the world. To educate people to help themselves rather than relying on others to do the work for them. To establish a sense of pride in achievement and to educate others to enable this change in attitude. His motto, “to help people to help themselves and to give them knowledge to do so” is lived in his daily life as he travels the world, a living example of how an education can transform someones life. Calvin has written a number of books that have received numerous literary awards and if you would like to know more about him or his books, please go to www.calvinhelin.com A formal “thankyou” was offered by Bob Blacker, co founder of Write to Read. W2R which is supported by the Rotary Club, installs libraries to rural and remote, indigenous communities and as such, is very much in tune with Calvin’s message. To know more about this Rotary supported project please go to |
Meeting notes 18 July 2017Bob Jones gave a fascination talk about his life. Snippets of his life from being born a day earlier than his birth certificate shows up to celebrating 60 years of marriage to his wife Pauline, he kept us amused. Over 50 years as a Rotarian and an endless list of other volunteer positions including Santa stand in and endless hours spent at St Albans Church, Bob is a kind and gentle man and his friendly greeting when we walk into the club on a Tuesdayis much appreciated especially by the ladies who enjoy his hugs. Thank you Bob you are an inspiration to us all. |
Meeting notes 11 July 2017Meeting notes: Presentation by John Charbonneau - Mortgage Broker and fellow Rotarian, explained away several myths about reverse Mortgages in Canada and if you missed the talk it is well worth finding out more.

Auctioneer Patrick GrantThis morning we were joined by an immensely funny and entertaining Rotarian, auctioneer and chaplain - Patrick Grant. Originally hailing from Montreal, he regaled us with stories from his youth about lost love in Richmond, to his humble beginnings as a chaplain in a hospital and church. After studying at auctioneer school in Billings, MT, in his words, he used to pray "for", now he preys "on" his flock. He now runs a successful event auction enterprise in Skagit valley and was kind enough to demonstrate his silky auditory skills to auction off a set of tickets to Beatlemania at the Hard Rock Casino, won by highest bidder, Peter Mitchell.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT (2012-13)The Rotary Club of Steveston continues its challenging schedule with the many projects and activities scheduled for 2012-2013 . Our members have attended the District Assembly, District Conference, Zone Conference, Rotary Leadership Institute training courses and Future Vision presentations. For various reasons, five long standing (if not charter) members of the club did not renew their membership in 2012-13. Although their decisions had been flagged to the current President in 2011-12, it was particularly sad to see the following members leave the club: Barb Bradey PP Bob Butterworth PP Sally Houston PP Bill McNulty PP Jim Toogood All of the above have been made Honorary Rotarians of the Rotary Club of Steveston. In July there was a club questionnaire, completed by 80% of active members. The results of the questionnaire were fed back to the Board and the general membership and formed the basis of the club policies for 2012-13. The Rotary Club of Steveston continues to support local church facilities to provide community meals, specifically with St. Alban’s and Gilmore Park. The Club also provides bursaries for post secondary education and supports a large Interact Club at McMath Secondary School. Fundraising to provide assistance to the many community and international projects requires a great deal of time and effort by our members. The major annual fundraising projects are: Steveston Seafood and Wine Festival Jimmy Ng Ball Hockey Tournament Prime Time ...and the Club is looking into creating a Rotary Club of Steveston Duck Race, to be inaugurated in August 2013. The Club continues to be very active in the community. Activities include the shoreline cleanup, donation of Christmas hampers, an annual BBQ and Christmas Lunch for Senior Citizens, the Santa Parade, the provision of dictionaries to local schools and, last but not least, acting like pirates at the annual Canada Day/Salmon Festival. The Rotary Club of Steveston is also involved in the international arena include funding for polio, school facilities in Trinidad and Tobago and literacy learning facilities with First Nation Communities in BC. Last but not least, the Rotary Club of Steveston adopted ‘Clubrunner’ as the platform for its new website; this not only brought the Club into line with other Rotary Clubs in Rotary District 5040, if not the BC Lower Mainland, but the move to 'Clubrunner' will aid tremendously in the administration of the Club. The old Rotary Club of Steveston website has been linked to the new one as an archive. |

Santa Parade: December 23, 2012The Rotary Club of Steveston's 2012 Santa Parade, through the streets of Steveston village, was a tremendous success.
Not only did everyone, both young and old, have a good time, but a great deal of food was donated (by people on the route) to the Richmond Food Bank. Also, we collected donations of cash on the route, which amounted to $356.00; this will be passed on to the Richmond Food Bank. Well done to everyone involved and...Merry Christmas! |
