John Guilfoyle - President of International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War Canada

Overview of talk
Presentation will focus on the mission of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War Canada. It will explore the links between the disarmament, the climate crisis and health. It examines Sustainable Development Goal 16, peace, justice and strong institutions, and its relevance to efforts to improve  global health. Brief mention will be made of the threat which nuclear weapons pose, the status of efforts toward nuclear disarmament and the link between nuclear power and nuclear weapons. 
The meeting will close with a brief discussion of implications of the current situations and what we might usefully do. 

Biography - John Guilfoyle

John lives in Squamish, British Columbia.  He has had a diverse and varied career in medicine.  This has included full-service family practice in rural Newfoundland and Manitoba, and five years as the Chief Medical Officer of Health for the province of Manitoba.  Following this was a short period as the Chief Medical Officer of a small Caribbean country responsible for the national health service program.  
On return he directed the residency program in family medicine at the University of Manitoba while working for the J Hildes Northern Medical Unit.  
This led to an interest in aboriginal health and work with an aboriginal organization in Sioux Lookout in northwestern Ontario with a focus on obstetrics. 
Recipient of a Fellowship in Women’s Health from the College of Family Physicians of Canada, John is now retired from clinical practice. 
He is currently the president of International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War Canada, which is committed to the abolition of nuclear weapons, the prevention of war, the promotion of non-violent means of conflict resolution and social justice in a sustainable world.
John continues to work internationally with the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada to improve health care services to women. 
He serves as a director of Pebbles to Pearls Foundation, an organization focused on providing access to education, particularly for girls and women, as a route to wellbeing and prosperity.
Happily married to Geraldine for over 45 years, they have 2 adult children, Jonathan and Regan and three grandchildren.
Interests include learning from others, sailing, skiing, mountain biking and playing the flute.
