Donna Goman, who is Infection Control Nurse at Tyler Memorial Hospital, spoke at the Nov 13 Tunkhannock Rotary Club Luncheon at Purkey's Pink Apple. Donna provided an overview of the Ebola crisis.

Ebola was first identified in 1976 in an area of Sudan (now part of South Sudan), and in Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo) near the Ebola river. Bats and primates are vehicles for transmission, especially bats. Ebola is spread by contact, it is not air or water-borne. There have been over 14,000 cases in Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia. Over 5,000 people have died. At this time, there is no cure or vaccine for Ebola.

Tyler has trained staff on proper procedure should a case of Ebola present at Tyler. If there is concern that a patient has Ebola, the patient would be isolated and treated by dedicated nurses with proper attire (impervious to fluids). The CDC and Dept. of Health would be notified immediately and the patient most likely transferred to a CDC designated facility.

Donna then briefly discussed the importance of getting the flu vaccine. If you are interested in receiving the flu or pneumonia vaccine, contact Donna at   570-996-1266 for more information.
