MAY 2014 ROTARY STUDENTS OF THE MONTH
Each month of the school year, the Lakeville Rotary Club recognizes students of the senior class who demonstrate “Service Above Self”.
For the month of May Lakeville South High School has chosen Joel Varghese for the May Rotary Student of the Month. Joel is an outstanding student with so many astonishing accomplishments. He is Captain of the boy’s Tennis Team, Chemistry Club President and DECA officer. In DECA he is a two-time International Champion. He volunteers his time on the board of directors for Minnesota Malayalee Association. He was on Kare 11 featuring a diversity video and discussion on discrimination. He is a Founder and First Chairman of Varnolsavam, an annual competition for young members.
His DECA Advisor describes Joel as very personable, hardworking, a team player, enthusiastic, an energetic leader, and very business savvy. He can win an audience over with his charm. Joel is a successful student taking 9 AP classes and 7 honors courses at Lakeville South.
Joel is a well-rounded student and person who is humble, hard-working, and dedicated to his school and community. Joel’s parents are Molly and Paul Varghese, and his Dean is Rachel Ruzzi.
For the month of May, Lindsey Smits was nominated at Lakeville North High School as Student of the Month. Lindsey is a very talented student. She has prepared well for college by successfully completing 10 Advanced Placement courses and many Honors and other rigorous courses. She manages to maintain a very high GPA while participating in athletics, school clubs, and 4-H, as well as maintaining two jobs. Lindsey plans to attend college at the University of Minnesota, where she will study medicine.
At Lakeville North High School, Lindsey is Track captain, in Nordic Ski, and Soccer. She is in NHS and HOSA. Lindsey volunteers at Fairview Ridges, is a Youth Teaching Youth in 4-H. Lindsey’s parents are David and Kari Smits, and her Dean is Paul Donner.
