Ask a Pharmacist – Steven Soukup spoke today about some common adult immunizations.  Flu, Shingles, and Pneumococcal Disease and prevention. Cub Food provided flu shot clinic for members and the other immunizations discussed at todays meeting are available at Cub Pharmacy.

Soukup shared that The Flu is an infection that deserves our attention. There are millions of cases per year and hundreds of thousands of hospitalizations per year, and Tens of thousands of deaths per year due to the flu.

Soukup shared the CDC description and the differences between the common cold and Flu: A cold has a gradual onset vs abrupt or sudden onset of the flu.  Cold symptoms are milder, and more nose/throat related. Symptoms are more severe with flu including a predominant fever, chills, headache, body aches.

Soukup stressed that if you get the flu to STAY HOME for 24 hours or until the fever is gone. People with flu are most contagious in the first 3-4 days after their illness begins.  He reminded us that some otherwise healthy adults may be able to infect others beginning 1 day before symptoms develop and up to 5 to 7 days after becoming sick.

Flu Shot Information - the flu shots are very different each year to target the most likely strains for the season.. Types of vaccine available include:  trivalent, quad, HD, PF, Mist – Cub foods provides the quad form of the vaccine.
