2018/05/06 District 5870 Rotary Hall of Fame Recipient - Brandi Lowe2018 District 5870 Hall of Fame Recipient, Brandi Lowe Letter submitted to District 5870 by President Joel Lopez: Brandi Lowe has been a member of the Rotary Club of Giddings since March 11, 2011 and has been an instrumental part of this organization. Brandi has served in multiple positions and was the president of the club for the 2015 - 2016 year. Brandi displays leadership in organizing and setting up two of our fundraising events. The Emmett Hannes 5k allows the club to give scholarships to graduating seniors. The Rotary Pancake Supper funds the Early Act / First Knight program at the elementary school. The leadership she displays in organizing and setting up for these events clearly display the "Service Above Self" and her commitment not just to our organization, but to the future of our youth. In addition to being a Rotarian, Brandi is a mother with a young child, a wife and a career-oriented woman. In today's world to juggle each of these means putting something aside. She gives of her time so others may benefit. It was no surprise in 2016 when she received the Rotarian of the Year award. In my opinion every club should have their own Brandi and we are certainly proud of ours. On behalf of the Rotary Club of Giddings I would like to nominate Brandi Lowe for District 5870 Roll of Fame. I am very thankful for your consideration in doing so. God Bless! |

2017/05/22 Wesley Keng added to the Rotary District 5870 Roll of Fame
Eight years ago on December 18, 2008, Wesley T. Keng was inducted into the Rotary Club of Giddings. He was nominated for membership into the club by Mary Lou Ross. During that time, he has continually been a member of the Giddings club. Wesley has served the club as the Vice President, President Elect, President (2012-13), Past President, President (2014-15) and chairperson and/or member of various committees. He also serves the club by managing the club webpage. Wesley was named Rotarian of the Year during 2012-13.
Less than a year after becoming a member, Wesley was selected to join the board. He spent 6 of his first eight years on the board of our club, and served as president twice in a three year period. During both of his terms as president, the Rotary Club of Giddings received the Presidential Citation.
While on the board, Wesley brought the Early Act/First Knight (EAFK) program to the Club and was the founding chairperson of the EAFK program at Giddings Elementary School. This program is very close to his heart and he continues to chair the EAFK committee. The program at Giddings Elementary is now in its fourth year.
In addition to EAFK, Wesley is passionate about the Rotary Foundation. He is a Paul Harris Fellow+4, Paul Harris Society member, and Benefactor. The Rotary Club of Giddings has always had strong Rotary Foundation giving, but in 2015 the club achieved 100% PHF status because of a program organized by Wesley.
He is a true “Rotarian” dedicated to the Rotary Club of Giddings and to the Rotary ideals set out in the 4-Way Test. The Rotary Club of Giddings is honored to nominate for the District 5870 Roll of Fame, Wesley T. Keng. Congratulations to Rotarian Wesley Keng for being inducted to the District 5870 Roll of Fame.

2013-15 International ProjectThe Rotary Clubs of Giddings, La Grange, and Bastrop County, Texas worked with the Rotary Clubs of Tampico, Alta Mira Miralta and Tampico Chairel, Mexico to develop and implement a Global Grant to provide safe water to four communities in Southern Tamaulipas, Mexico. Funding was provided by these six clubs, the Interact Club of Bastrop High School, District 4130, District 5870, and the Rotary Foundation.
Marginalized communities in this area are home to over 12,000 poor and lack the infrastructure to provide safe water to them. This makes them vulnerable to water-borne infectious agents.
This grant provided funding to purchase and install four reverse osmosis (RO) water purification machines each of which purifies 6,000 liters of water daily and a tank truck which can transport 10,000 liters of water. The RO machines provide purified drinking water to the four communities. The tank truck delivers water to the RO machines and also provides sanitary water to the communities for laundry, bathing and other general cleaning needs.
This grant was one of the first approved under the new Global Grant program instituted by the Rotary Foundation and incorporates the goals of greater cooperation among clubs to create larger projects with sustainable outcomes. The Rotary Club of Giddings was proud to be a part of this worthwhile project.

2014/03/31 Early Act/First Knight Tournament of ChampionsOn March 31, 2014 the Knights of the Guild put on an exhibition of their skills for the students of Giddings Elementary School as part of the Early Act/First Knight (EAFK) program. The Knights performed feats of skill and daring as they used their broadswords, lances, and other weapons to entertain the kids. The Knights performed on large warhorses specially trained for this event. The hundreds of children and adults in attendance witnessed the Knights skillfully threaded their lances through a small ring, sliced heads of lettuce in half with their swords, and performed a sword fighting exhibition, all while riding their steeds at full speed. The Knights also taught the children about their code of chivalry and how using other skills like honesty and compassion are just as important.
The EAFK program started at the beginning of this school year at Giddings Elementary. EAFK is a year-round character and service education program that rewards high ethical standards and an ethos of “service above self.” Through EAFK, the pursuit of excellent personal character, social skills and service orientation rejoins academic achievement as the measure of a well-rounded education. During the 2013-2014 school year, every six-weeks, GES students demonstrating the noble virtues and service under The Code have been selected to receive a knightly medallion and earn a regal title (knight, squire, page, etc.). The EAFK program at Giddings Elementary is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Giddings.

2013/11/05 EarlyAct FirstKnight Tournament of Champions PostponedThe Rotary Club of Giddings is very disappointed to announce that the EarlyAct FirstKnight Tournament of Champions scheduled for November 5, 2013 at 1:15 p.m. will have to be postponed because of weather. The news is saying that we will get about a half inch of rain before 1:00 p.m. on November 5th. Even if it isn't raining at the time the tournament is scheduled the horses and knights cannot safely perform in the mud. We will reschedule in the Spring when the weather (might) be a little more predictable.

The campers were encouraged to try new things and explore new roles. Camp activities included river rafting, a ropes course, the RYLA Olympics, talent shows, and hikes, just to name a few. In addition, while at camp, the campers performed a community service project helping an elderly Bastrop man clear his land which was damaged in the Bastrop fire. And the winner is...The Rotary Foundation! It's getting an additional $500 contribution, thanks to the Tri-County Presidential Challenge contest. At the beginning of this Rotary year, the presidents of the Bastrop County, Giddings and La Grange clubs settled on a challenge to see who could raise the most money, per capita, for the Rotary Foundation this year. The winner was to be decided as of May 1. The winning club was Giddings, which raised $168.50 per capita. La Grange was just behind at $162.61 and Bastrop County had $151.96. As a result, each of the two "losing" clubs contributed an extra $250 to the Foundation in the name of the Giddings Club. Pictured, La Grange president Chuck Mazac presents a $250 check for the Foundation to Giddings president Wesley Keng as its share for the contest. Total giving by the three clubs combined at this same point two years ago was $14,882.50. This year it stands at $25,559.50 -- an increase of 72 percent. The winner of this presidential challenge, created by Bastrop's John Eaton, La Grange's Chuck Mazac and Giddings' Wesley Keng, is the Giddings Rotary Club, but much more importantly, the winner is The Rotary Foundation. |
