2020-03-14 - Rather than do a web conference, Qusay has asked that we postpone his presentation until the current COVID-19 crisis passes.

Qusay Hussein will be talking to us on Why are there so many misconceptions about refugees and people with disabilities?"

Qusay Hussein is a student, interpreter, advocate, and a motivational speaker. He currently serves on the Advisory Committee for Refugee Services of Texas and interprets for Arabic-speaking refugees. He is also a mentor for incoming students at Austin Community College and a member of the Alpha Gamma Pi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. Qusay also serves on the Board for the Austin Chapter of the National Federation of the Blind and the Texas Association of Blind Students. While in Jordan he served as a patient counselor for Doctors Without Borders.

On August 3rd, 2006, in Mosul, Iraq, Hussein was nearly killed by a suicide bomber.   His vision was gone, and his face was severely damaged.  After traveling to Jordan, he endured over 50 surgeries to reconstruct his face through Doctors Without Borders.  After leaving Jordan, he was sent to Austin as a refugee.  In May 2016, At age 27, he received his GED with honors, and he earned an Associate’s Degree from ACC in May 2018, and was the keynote speaker at his graduation.
