We heard from Cadet Jacob Maschillo, a Clinton native and Junior at West Point today before our program. As part of his Public Relations task, he explained how he was encouraged by his HS Football Coach to learn about West Point Academy and the rigorous acceptance process he went through before being sponsored by Tammy Baldwin and Mark Pocan. He described a typical day and the challenging physical and mental training they receive. The United States Military Academy's mission is to educate, train and inspire the Corps of Cadets so that each graduate is a commissioned leader of character committed to the values of Duty, Honor, Country and prepared for a career of professional excellence and service to the nation as an officer in the United States Army. Upon graduation, Jacob plans to attend flight School for 2 years and serve 5 years of active duty and 2 more in the reserves. Sue Boettcher's son graduated from West Point, and she encourages everyone to visit the beautiful campus if you're traveling in NY.

Major Bob Fay from the Salvation Army was our speaker today.
Majors Bob and Ruth Fay came to Janesville 6 years ago, and have been serving in the Salvation Army for 38 years. They have 2 married daughters and 4 grandchildren. The Salvation Army was founded in 1865 by Methodist Minister William Booth, who formed The Christian Mission to help the poorest and neediest in Victorian England.  As generational support broke down with urban relocation, he filled a need to help those who were down and out and isolated by helping in practical ways (food, shelter) so they could minister spiritually. The Army spread quickly throughout Europe and into America- arriving in Janesville 20 years later in 1885.
We are all familiar with the Red Kettle Campaign- Major Bob likened it to a Red submarine breaking the surface of the water and visible to all- but year round services include many community outreach programs such as social services, a Monday-Friday meal program that feeds an average of 60-80 daily meals, Pathway of Hope for families, a transitional living home, Coats for Kids, Thanksgiving meal, Caring Ministries at Rock Haven, Food Baskets, and 3 holiday programs that provide gifts and food to over 384 families.
There are many ways you can help, and many volunteer opportunities. They post up-t0-date opportunities on FB, or visit janesvilleSA.org, or call 608 757-8300.

Rotary members in Cleveland, Ohio, USA, celebrated 100 years of The Rotary Foundation on 23 October with a banquet and a concert by The Cleveland Orchestra that have so far raised more than $2.1 million for the Foundation's next century of good work. Arch Klumph, a Cleveland Rotarian, planted the seed for The Rotary Foundation in 1917, with his idea of having an endowment fund dedicated to "doing good in the world." Today's District 6630 leaders thought that a concert was a fitting way to honor Klumph and mark the centennial because of Klumph's love of music. Klumph performed in several...

Participation in this year’s World Polio Day live-streamed event continued the growth registered since it began in 2014. Rotary, the world’s leading advocacy organization on polio eradication, held this year’s program on 24 October at the headquarters of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. The event brought some of the biggest names in the campaign together to highlight the progress that has been made and to discuss what further action is needed to end the disease for good. Here is a summary of this year’s World Polio Day event, by the numbers:...

The Association of Fundraising Professionals has recognized The Rotary Foundation with its annual Award for Outstanding Foundation. The award honors organizations that show philanthropic commitment and leadership through financial support, innovation, encouragement of others, and involvement in public affairs. Some of the boldest names in American giving — Kellogg, Komen, and MacArthur, among others —are past honorees. “We are honored to receive this recognition from the AFP, which gives us even more reason to celebrate during our Foundation’s centennial year,” says Rotary Foundation Trustee...

Outside the United Nations building in midtown Manhattan stands an imposing sculpture of a man wielding a sword in one hand and raising a hammer with the other. It reflects a shared goal that Rotary and the United Nations celebrated at the organizations' annual meeting on Saturday, 12 November: to use our strengths and tools to build a more peaceful and just world. The theme of this year's Rotary Day at the United Nations, "Responsible Business, Resilient Societies," emphasizes Rotary's role as a global network of business leaders using the tools of their trades to build stronger, more...
