Stop Hunger Now is delighted to announce that meals from the October 15th joint meal packaging event have been shipped in a container with 285,120 meals from our National Capital warehouse, in Ashburn, VA. The meals will be received by their in-country partner Reach Now International - Zambia. Ashburn Rotary packaged 10,000 meals along with students from Freedom High School and members of the Gainesville-Haymarket and Leesburg Evening Clubs and members of the soon to be charted South Riding Club.

Stop Hunger Now meals serve needy children in Zambia through Reach Now and Mission Touch Ministries. Missions Touch Ministries (MTM) was formed in 2008 as a non-governmental organization (NGO) and brings in containers of food, medical supplies and other goods to benefit 35+ community schools, orphanages and other feeding programs. Missions Touch and Reach Now support approximately 10,000 children with a hot meal each school day in and around Lusaka, Zambia. Many of the children served are drawn into the schools from the streets because of the provision of food. The enrollment at the schools often doubles when the feeding program is introduced, brightening the future of countless impoverished children. The addition of Stop Hunger Now meals enables Missions Touch and Reach Now to provide for the nutritional needs of the children enrolled in their program.

The Ashburn Club held a great "Rotary Day" on October 23rd with special guest Cindy Chambers. Cindy was presented with a check for $2,200 that will go to purchasing "Beamer Learns About Fire Safety" books. The books will be distributed to children in the community and will teach them about fire safety. The grant was made possible through the Rotary Foundation.

Also on hand were Loudoun Co Fire & Rescue Deputy Chief Jose Salazar, District Rotary Foundation Chair Chuck Davidson and about 30 guests and prospective members. Chuck Davidson presented Shawn Mitchell, John Casamiquela, Chris Little, Lynde Scheffer, and Todd Meloy with their Paul Harris pins. And Finally, Past President Shawn Mitchell presented Adam Benware with the September Rotarian of the Month award for his great contributions to the club!

On October 23rd, Ashburn Club member Adam Benware was recognized as September's Rotarian of the Month.

Adam's many contributions to the club include, assisting with cleaning-up and ensuring accurate information in ClubRunner, enhancing and improving weekly meeting surveys and establishing a "comment database" to track results, created a weekly announcement Powerpoint to keep members informed of Ashburn Rotary and District events, and created the Liberia Amazon Wishlist for St. David's Episcopal Church to make it easier for community members to shop for items that will be shipped overseas to help stop the spread of the Ebola virus.

Thank you to Adam for all of his contributions to the club and community!

Over 50 volunteers including Freedom HS students, DG Nominee George Tyson, and Rotarians from the Leesburg Evening, Gainesville-Haymarket, and Ashburn clubs, and the soon to be chartered South Riding Roundtable packed 10,000 meals on October 15th for Stop Hunger Now. Ashburn Rotary also dontaed $1,000 to the cause. Thanks to all the volunteers that made it out to the event!

We learned last Thursday from guest speaker Rev. Mary Kay Brown that St. David's Episcopal Church is collecting items to be shipped to Liberia in the effort to fight the spread of the Ebola virus. The "Liberia Wish List" of needed items is available to view and purchase at the attached Amazon.com link. Please take a moment to consider donating and thank you to member Adam Benware for creating the list on Amazon.com!

Ashburn Rotarians & Friends of Rotary took some time on Saturday September 20th to provide help for a Purcellville resident in need. The team completed some yard work, painting and general clean-up. It was a beautiful Saturday and we're looking forward to more opportunities to serve.
