Past President Bill Brilliant was pinch hitting for Prez. Bob Beaumont. He called the meeting to order promptly at 07:15 and led us in the pledge of Allegiance. He then called upon Ron McLaughlin for the invocation. After welcoming guest speaker Peter Lindsey to the meeting Bill then called upon Club Sheriff Bill Gillespie for Happy / Sad dollars.

Bill Gillespie, baseball fan per none, had a sad dollar for the baseball season drawing to a close, supplanted by that darn sport, football. Bill Brillant had happy dollars for playing tourist over the weekend, showing his In-laws around mid-Coast Maine. Pete Lindsey had a happy dollar for being sable to join us. Bob Davis had a happy dollar for Peter joining us. Joel Merry had a happy dollar for the much needed rain. Bob Guerette shared Joel’s thought, happy for the rain, and accomplished some yard work over the weekend. Cliff Hodges, the Michigan Wolverine fan, had a happy dollar for another convincing win. Gordon was happy to be at the meeting, enjoying all our stories. Fred had a late dollar.

Under Announcements Bill reminded us of:

Tuesday, September 27 – 5:30 – 7 PM Fill Back Packs at Hunger Prevention

Thursday, September 29 - 6  PM 10th Anniversary function at the Black Lantern B & B, 57 Elm Street

Continued presentations on Dollars for Diapers.

Bob Davis then introduced our speaker, Peter Lindsey, Director of Success by 6 for the United Way. Pater, a sort of annual presenter, gave a presentation on a new topic, relying on recent research tying Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) to mental and physical problems in adults many years later. While mental illness problems with adults was long considered related to childhood experiences anecdotally

,the new research confirms the relationship of adverse childhood experiences with mental illness problems as adults and also established the physical relationship. The new research also quantifies that the greater number of ACE’s a child has the much higher likelihood of emotional or physical problems as adults. It also establishes that there are children who, despite ACE experiences overcome them and develop into healthy, emotionally stable adults with the research continuing to identify the predictors for that success.

Locally the results of the ACE research are being translated into actions to mentor expectant parents on the importance of providing a healthy, low stress environment for their children, including ensuring they know of the resources available to them to aid them in childrearing and providing a positive home live, even with limited resources.

As always from Peter a very interesting, informative presentation.
