SOUTHWICK ROTARY CLUB AND SOUTHWICK LIONS CLUBS TO UPDATE VETERANS WAR MEMORIAL
The Southwick Rotary Club and the Southwick Lions Club have come together to work on a community service project for the Town of Southwick. The project involves an update to the existing War Memorial situated on the corner of College Highway and Depot Street on the property of the Southwick Congreational Church.
The existing memorial was built in 1947 to honor war veterans who served in the American Revolution, World War I and World War II. An addition was made to the memorial in the early 1960s to honor veterans who served in the Korean War. A second addtiion was built in the early 1980s to honor veterans who served the Vietnam War.
In order to preserve our history and to continually honor our local veterans, the project will honor war veterans who served the Persian Gulf War, Desert Storm, Iraq and Afghanistan. Two four foot two-sided wings will be added to the existing memorial.
The cost for the project is $10,000 and it will include side walk improvements to accommmodate a safe entry from the church parking lot to the existing and new Memorial. The design of the new structure will complement the existing War Memorial. The unveiling of the new memorial will be made on Veterans Day.
Funding for this project will be done throughfundraisers hosted by both the Rotary and Lions Clubs with support from the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign War. The clubs are also accepting donations from individuals and businesses.
The unveiling of the added memorial will be held on Veterans Day 2016.
