Fall Creek Watershed Video
Jan 04, 2017
Fred says "my wife, Roberta, and I have finished the Fall Creek video that we started in the Spring of 2015. We received an educational grant from the San Lorenzo Valley Water District to make a video about Fall Creek and where the community of Felton gets its water. As we have gotten into the project, more and more mysteries and information have serendipitously emerged. We knew that the community of Felton got its high quality cool water from Fall Creek at the intake pond just below the entrance to Fall Creek state park, but where does Fall Creek get its water? |

California Invention Convention
Jan 18, 2017
This year I had the opportunity to be an interim superintendent/principal in a small school district in Davenport CA. When teaching, years ago, before becoming a principal, I did an invention program with my students that convinced me that by solving a meaningful problem in their own lives, by coming up with an invention for the solution, students became empowered to think divergently, work collaboratively, develop creative thinking skills, and become innovative thinkers. These are the very skills that are needed in our children’s lives to make them successful individuals for the rest of their lives! So, when the opportunity arose, I asked the fifth/sixth grade teacher at Davenport if she would mind if I did an invention program with her students. And so the journey began. Wonderful inventions appeared, in answer to the problems they expressed. The winners went onto a local science fair, as our local county office of education allowed “Inventions” to be included, this year. We would like to send several winners and their families to the National Invention Convention that will take place on May 21, 2016 and will be held at the US Patent and Trade Office in Washington DC http://www.stemie.org/2016-national-invention-convention.html . Won’t you please help in this endeavor? We would like this to be the first effort in helping to bring about a California Invention Convention that will involve many more students throughout the state to become inventors and innovators. We are hoping to raise these funds by April 30, so we will know how many of our students we are able to send to the National Convention. It will be an experience they will never forget. The cost is approximately $2500 per student and chaperone, for airfare, hotel for three nights, and expenses. Thank you for considering helping us with the worthwhile experience for children! |

SLV Alano Club
Mar 01, 2017
The south end of Boulder Creek’s main drag is humming with life again as SLV Alano Club fills the empty space left by Video 9. It was a pleasant surprise to enter the familiar premises to find comfortable sofas, a big screen TV with folks gathered round to watch a DVD, and tables of community members busily collaborating. The atmosphere was convivial, casual, and welcoming to a stranger blowing in off the street. Co-owner Rickey E rose from the conversation to greet me, offering a warm, well calloused working man’s hand. He gave me the tour, peering into the meeting room in the back where rows of sofas and chairs were arranged facing forward awaiting meeting night when people from all walks of life come to lay down their burdens and hear much needed words of encouragement. He pointed to snacks, water, and sodas in a refrigerated case and a plate of donuts on the counter, all of which, he explained, are gratis to anyone who has come to the center for support and needs something to tide them over. Donations are accepted but they cannot charge for the refreshments. |
