Belarus Freedom Forum Rep to Discuss 'Last Dictatorship in Europe' at Hayward Rotary April 15

A representative of the Belarus Freedom Forum’s Bay Area organization will talk about how his group is working to restore democracy in the "last dictatorship in Europe" at the April 15 lunch meeting of the Hayward Rotary Club.

Dmitry Borodaenko will describe how his country has endured a series of fraudulent elections (including presidential), and how dictator Alyaksandr Lukashenka has had 50,000 persons arrested, 4,644 tortured, and imprisoned 1,414 political prisoners and 34 journalists. Those imprisoned include 2022 recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, Alex Bialiatski.

Lukashenka has also disbanded more than 270 independent nonprofit organizations. Russia is one of the few countries in the world that recognizes his government as legitimate.

"I saw my own country walk the path from a flawed democracy to authoritarianism," Borodaenko writes. "I saw the colonial superpower next door, Russia, walk the same path even faster and get all the way back to totalitarianism. Now I see my new country, the one where I still don't have a right to vote, set off down the same path."

2024 Rowell Ranch Rodeo Fundraiser

Hayward Rotary Club operates the food and drink concessions during the three days of the Rowell Ranch Rodeo. All the proceeds from our food and drink sales go toward our charitable work in the Hayward community -- specifically, by giving Community Grants to local nonprofit organizations each year. Volunteers are needed to help us sling burgers, fries, and soft drinks to the thirsty crowd! Join in the fun, get to know Rotary Club members as you serve, and experience some of our community's western heritage watching real cowboys "at work and play"; all while we raise money for great causes.

'Service above self'

Rotary's motto of 'Service above self' is duly followed by yet another organization. The men and women of California Highway Patrol put their service to the community higher than their own self, when they walk out into their field duties daily. On Monday, April 8 Officer Daniel Jackowitz will present a keynote on how the CHP puts service first.

Daniel was born and raised in the Bay Area and he attended Chabot College in Hayward. He graduated from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Academy and was appointed as a Police Officer in 2008. Daniel has served as a Drug Recognition Expert, Mental Illness Response Program Instructor and Public Information Officer. Currently, Daniel is assigned to patrol duties, where he serves as a Field Training Officer. He is also a member of the Golden Gate Division Special Response and Crisis Negotiation Teams. Daniel joined Rotary International in February of 2023, and currently is the Speaker Chair for the Castro Valley Club. He also serves as Chair (2024) of the Citizen’s Advisory Committee, for the Hayward Area Recreation Park District.

Daniel is a proud father of three children and he enjoys volunteering in school and community events.

Rotary Vietnam Project That Addresses At-Risk Youth Detailed at Hayward Rotary Lunch Meeting April 1

The international outreach coordinator for the Rotary Vietnam Project will be the featured speaker when the Hayward Rotary Club next meets for a luncheon on Monday, April 1. Project co-chair Evan Dang will discuss how the nonprofit organization, an outgrowth of Rotary's District 5170 and covering the Bay Area, combats human trafficking by providing at-risk youth in Vietnam with educational scholarships.

From the project website: "Children who grow up with a lack of education often fall into situations where they are being coerced and exploited for labor" "We believe that education plays a crucial role in empowering youth by equipping them with the knowledge and skills needed to build an independent, stable, and hopeful future."

Since 2015, the organization has volunteered 1,500 hours with tutoring and service trips, and more raised $225,400 with donations from Rotarians and private donor matching. The organization website is here: http://www.rotarydistrict5170vietnamproject.org

More Than $40,000 in Hayward Rotary Grants to be Awarded Monday

Seventeen local organizations will receive more than $40,000 in grant awards when the Hayward Rotary Club meets for its lunch meeting on Monday, March 25. The club has a long tradition of supporting Hayward nonprofits with individual grants ranging from $500 to $3,000. Representatives of this year's recipients will be on hand to make brief comments on how their grant allocation will be used.

The application process begins with announcement of the program each fall. This year's applications were reviewed and scored by a committee of Rotarians chaired by retired Chabot College President Bob Carlson. Other committee members are Hayward Mayor Mark Salinas, Valerie Caveglia, Robin Wilma, Mona Diamantine, and Barbara Halliday.

New Hayward Chief of Police Addresses Hayward Rotarians March 18

New Hayward Chief of Police Bryan Matthews, a Hayward Rotarian, will address the Hayward Rotary Club at its lunch meeting on Monday, March 18. He is a career Hayward police officer and has taken command of a department he led in a temporary and acting capacity since September 2022.

Matthews, whose appointment was effective Wednesday, Jan. 3, succeeds Chief Toney Chaplin, who retired after a 33-year career in policing.

Chief Matthews takes charge of a department with 197 sworn police officer and 136.5 non-sworn professional staff positions.

"I am grateful for the opportunity to continue to give back to the community that, in many ways, raised me," the new chief said after his appointment by the Hayward City Council. "Hayward holds a very special place in my heart."

At the Rotary meeting, Matthews will talk about how he plans to move the Hayward Police Department forward through, "listening, strengthening relationships, implementing problem-solving strategies, and providing high levels of customer service.”

Prospects for Residential Real Estate in 2024 Shared With Rotarians March 11

What will happen to East Bay real estate in 2024 is a mystery, but we do know that the median price of a home in the entire Bay Area rose 10.6% between January 2023 and January 2024 to $1.1 million.

Bay East Realtors Association Chief of Public Affairs David Stark will help Hayward Rotary Club members make sense of an often-confusing real estate situation at our noon lunchtime meeting on Monday, March 11. His organization represents Realtors throughout Alameda and Contra Costa counties, but as a longtime member of the Hayward Chamber of Commerce, Stark has a particular interest in our city. He manages the association’s communications, media relations, political activities and works with elected leaders and government staff in the development of housing policies.

Prior to joining the Bay East staff he worked in municipal government managing a variety of housing and community development programs.
