Program

Program:Larry Jangula - Mayor of City of Courtenay

Policing:
Policing is provincially funded and is not on a per capita basis
Lots of lobbying to get sufficient policing
Response time is long because members are in short supply
City of Courtenay pays 90% of RCMP costs and towns like Comox pay 70%. Small communities pay much less.
The formula doesn’t always make sense: i.e. Major crime – the city pays the full cost unless it is in the rural area

Parking at New Hospital:
Contract made with local land owners to lease some land close to the site for parking

Taxation rates for commercial properties
Why don’t we ask the province to have different zones in commercial zones
Commercial properties pay 3X taxes more than do residential areas
Water/garbage are all issues needing addressing
The Province has not moved on this.
Lobby our MLA to get action on this matter, but the city needs the same amount of tax base
Passed last night – budget – increases taxes – 2% for basic tax and 2% for basic infrastructure
Union wages up 2%, policing costs went up. Hydro has gone up
200 kms of pavement that lasts 20 – 25 years. 8kms/year. Asset Management

Rotary Trails
The city is in support
Bike trails
Some citizens want bike lanes on Willemar and Piercy
The plan is to have the trail down the island

Complete Streets
3.2M to put in about 1KM in downtown Courtenay
The purchase of the Bridge
http://www.courtenay.ca/EN/main/city-hall/projects- gallery/5th-street- complete-streets- pilot-project/faq-5th- street-complete- street.html

Downtown Business - Charette
Less than 100 people came out and it was the same individuals
Some ideas were good: trails along the river, closing Duncan Street, 2 bike bridges
