BIRTHDAY BIO - Pauline Stevenson
acknowledge with a 20 year pin - so not going to talk about one year but will for 20 years
One of the first female Courtenay Rotarians 20 years later
1989 - male only clubs around the world
November 1989 RI board issues a policy recognizing the right of rotary in Canada to admin Females
Eliminate require to limit membership to men and women were welcomed
Courtenay club - 1996 was an only male club and late in adopting policy
50% of the club threatened to leave the club at the time
Knowing the history is critical 
What she is proud of is that the issue of gender we are a peaceful club and the change happened after a peaceful push (Supreme court ruling)
Neil Woodrow - did not want the club for  few years 
It was difficult showing up as a young professional 30 year old woman and feel welcomed. 20 years ago
she wanted to be a source of peaceful means.  
Fellowship:  motivated by a team to help move sister to VGH or she would die.  Pauline asked for help.  Rotarians jumped on board to help Pauline.  On the national news with our club help to make some noise.  She got years more of her life.
On her 52nd birthday, after 20 years of as a member, she is really honoured to be a Rotarian

Program - Compassion Dogs
 
 
PROGRAM – BC Guide Dog Services for the Military Soldiers
Barb was approached by DND to provide services and developed the programs but there is no funding
Started with 1 person and now have 20 people in the program
Different than the basic program. Interviewed and paired with the dog twice a week for 52 weeks.  In Nanoose
Come from Victoria, Sydney, Courtenay...all over the island
 
First three months - basic training - foster care program before matching with veterans
 
Public Access for the next 3 months - eat a restaurant, being in a crowd, malls, 
 
Veterans are moved out of their comfort zone with PTSD (isolation a common issue with PTSD)
 
9 fully graduated now

Working towards being accreditation for world wide school.  
Have Society and Charity Status
Each dog team costs $15000 to put through program (costs,insurance, food etc)
 
Fundraisers (Gala, fundraisers) to raise money for the organization
No funding yet from Veterans Affairs
 
Sunrise Rotary Club - do a mountain bike ride from Courtenay to Port Alberni - raised $3000 in year one.  Next year will be bigger
 
Brian - is a veteran with 26 years in military and has Trooper - 1 1/2 years old
Brian has PTSD
Trooper is a rescue dog
People always question why Brian needs a dog
 
PTSD - Brian spent a year in Bosnia 
Flight/Fight response after his time in Bosnia
That memory goes into a different part of the brain

Sometime triggers are immediate
Brian now has diabetes and a heart condition (all due to PTSD)
There is no cure
 
Symptoms:
Flashbacks
Nightmares
Disassociation
 
Trooper - intervenes before PTSD symptoms kick in 
Nightmares - Trooper will get on the bed and put pressure against Brian or wraps his head
If he's in a line and Brian gets nervous, Brian has special commands
Trooper warns him when someone walks behind Brian
Brian can now go out without the help of his wife
Brian has to carry a card to validate his dog that he can access all public areas
 
Please do not approach and ask to pet the dog. Let the dog do it's job
