Stories
We were treated to an informative presentation on Ebola - Not Just an African Problem by Dr. Utibe "UT" Effiong just minutes before he boarded an international flight to speak at the TEDx conference in Berlin. At the conclusion we learned that UT would like to become a member of the Rotary Club of Ann Arbor North.

Dr. Effiong is sponsored by RCAAN Member Scott Nelson and in accordance with club by-laws calling for a 10-day sunshine period, he will be inducted at our September 18th meeting. We're excited about welcoming our newest member and very grateful to Scott Nelson for inviting him into our Rotary Family.

A brief biography/introduction for Dr. Effiong will be included in next week's newsletter. As promised at our September 4 meeting, here are links to a short list of UT's radio interviews, published articles and You Tube videos:

Our annual Meeting in the Garden will take place on September 11.  A box lunch will be served, soft drinks will be available and we guarantee that there will be no ants at our picnic. There won't be any chairs however so PLEASE remember that you need to bring your own chair. The weather people are calling for a breezy 67 degree afternoon so please dress accordingly.

If you have not ordered your lunch, please email tamra.ward1@gmail.com
On Monday evening, September 8, we received word from Cheryl Altman with The Heidelberg that their poker room is officially closed. The new 'emergency' rules have convinced the owners not to reopen the Charity Poker Room.

This unfortunate change in events requires us to strongly support a second fundraising event during the 2014 - 2015 Rotary year. The addition of a second event means that we will need strong support from our membership to fill volunteer roles for the 'Lost in Space' Fundraising Dinner on March 28, 2015 and the First Annual Phil Zepeda Golf Tournament planned for May - June 2015.  Additional details on committees, meeting dates and available volunteer assignments will be forwarded to you within the next two weeks.
You are cordially invited to attend a mixer with the District Governor Don Riddell at the Downtown Main Martini Bar, 201 W. Main Street, Brighton on Thursday, September 18 from 5:30 to 8:30 pm. Non-Rotarians are welcome!

To RSVP, please contact Rotarian Aleia Jackson of the Livingston Sunrise Club via email to:  http://ajackson@university-wealth.com

Cheers!
Connect with your fellow Rotarians, family and friends for a fun Rotary District 6380 Day at the Zoo.

RI President Gary Huang is encouraging all clubs to Light Up Rotary in 2014-15 by hosting Rotary Days. The concept of a Rotary Day is simple: hold a fun, informal event in your community for both Rotarians and the general public and use it as an opportunity to introduce non-Rotarians to Rotary and drive interest in membership and other opportunities for engagement. These events are also a great opportunity to get Rotary Alumni and New Generations program participants more involved in their local club. Rotarians can refer to the Rotary Days brochure for ideas on how to structure and promote their Rotary Day events.

In addition, sponsoring or participating in a Rotary Day event is one of the required activities that will help clubs qualify for the 2014-15 Presidential Citation.

This week's Happy Dollars were given by:

Stephen Modell is grateful for Rotarian support of daughter Marissa's raffle benefiting the Huron High School Women's Varsity Tennis Team. In thanks, he brought us some very nice chocolates to share. Yum!

John Rasmussen was very happy to announce that he will be traveling the world as a Rotary volunteer and teaching Diabetes Education classes in Jamaica, Brazil, Ghana, Nigeria and East Africa.

Manish Mehta presented a wonderful update on Project Dignity: over $40k has been raised and through grants we will leverage an additional $84k to build sanitation facilities to further advance our work in the Sundarbans in East India. In addition, we're sending some District 6380 Rotarians on a Friendship Exchange to India in late 2015 so that we can thank our international partners for their efforts. Thanks, Manish - this is awesome news!

Scott Nelson was celebrating the hiring of some helping hands to complete a face lift of the Butterfly Garden just in time for next week's annual meeting. Special thanks to Bob Greenough for financing the hired gardeners.

Phil Zepeda is delighted to fund a matching grant in honor of Dr. Steve Modell.

Bob Greenough shared memorabilia from his recent trip to Muskegon that included a first time visit to the USS Silversides submarine.

This week we welcomed Rotarians John Hammond, John Rassmussen, and our honorary member Dr. Steve Modell in addition to our guest speaker, Dr. Utibe Effiong and first-time visitor Tracey Long (guest of Tamra Ward). We are grateful to Bob Greenough for his gracious introduction of our guests and thanks in advance to our September 11th Greeter, Scott Nelson.
We celebrated the birthdays of Bryan Schnindel (September 3), Jeff Crause (September 9) and the Rotary Anniversaries of Sofia Franciscus and Joel Gechter (August 29) and last but not least, the 33rd Rotary Anniversary of the esteemed Phil Zepeda on September 3.

We would like to celebrate the birthdays, anniversaries and blessed events of our Rotary family but discovered that we do not have complete information on file for our membership. Have you checked your profile on Club Runner recently? If you haven't updated your profile lately and/or you have forgotten your password to access your profile, please contact tamra.ward1@gmail.com
This week's drawing was won by Gordon Nordby and sold by Eric Tindell.  Just like the Publisher's Clearing House, next weeks' winner could be you, but you've got to be at our September 11 meeting to purchase your ticket from Stephanie Oliver!
