ARC GOES TO POT:  Member Rolfe Schlake takes Rotary members on a trip into the truth and falsehoods of marijuana.

By Frank Whelan

Everything you learned in your junior high health class about marijuana was wrong, except maybe the part about hair growing in palm of your hand.  Opps, that’s a different subject Ok well maybe that was wrong also

According to Schlake the federal government continues to believe the “Reefer Madness” view that has been advocated since the 1930s because it wants to believe it like a religious chant.  Instead of looking at what marijuana is they repeat the same old bromides.

Despite the fact that thousands of studies show that it is not a “gateway level entry drug” they resist them. Using that logic Coors Light is the gate way to dry martinis.”  In looking at marijuana says Schlake the rule should be “data determines,” he says and “dogma is dogshit.”

But Schlake’s presentation was lot more than a screed.  Instead it was thoughtful look at the plant, what parts of it are useful including of course that hemp is used for rope.

Schlake also touched on the many medical pain relief property uses of marijuana. Doctors and scientists around the world continue to explore it.  And despite the cries of some in government there is even an understanding in some states to legalize pot and not just for medical uses

Following the talk was a lively question and answer session on marijuana proving that there is plenty of interest around this topic.
