Christine Oaklander, our Rotary presenter on Feb 23rd, shared a story with us about Derek Reynoso, a 2016 Mullin Scholar.  They met because Derek was one of the artists in Art in the Park last year.   Christine was impressed enough by the ceramic work Derek did that she not only bought one of his large pieces, she encouraged him to raise his prices!   She has also taken on the role of mentor in his life and predicts that he will become a very successful artist.  He already has quite a display of ceramic vases, 2-D and 3-D work, sculptures, raw stoneware and charcoal drawings on his on his website.
Christine congratulated the Roger and Louise Mullin Scholarship Committee and the Club for selecting him as the Mullin Scholar in 2016. Christine emphasized how important the Scholarship has been for Derek.  Because his parents could not afford his college expenses, our Rotary Scholarship is a big boost toward his future success.  Besides being busy with his classwork and art, he has 2 part time jobs and works in the Ceramic Arts area at WVU.

Derek is completing his 2nd year at West Virginia University and keeps in touch with the Committee through Nan Yarrish.  He is pursuing a degree in Ceramic Art and Business.  He won't be back in Allentown until he finishes classes in May, but hopes to come to a Rotary meeting when he is available.
