The Rotary Clubs of Windsor (1918), Ann Arbor and Detroit, in collaboration with Wayne State University’s Center for Peace and Conflict Studies, will hold a two-day conference highlighting the root causes and potential solutions to violence in our communities. The conference, entitled “Peace in the Streets,” will take place October 25th at Wayne State University Student Center Ballroom from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and October 26th from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in Windsor at the University of Windsor Law School, located at 401 Sunset Ave.

Keynote Speaker in Detroit on Friday, October 25th:

12:15 – 1:15pm: Samantha Fuentes, Parkland Florida High School shooting survivor. Fuentes will deliver a keynote address on “Outcomes from Parkland” which details her personal story in the Parkland massacre, how it led her to activism, and what she, March for our Lives, and others are doing to raise awareness and lessen such horrific events now and in the future.


Featured Keynote Speakers in Windsor on Saturday, October 26th:

12:30 – 1:15pm: Indrani Pal-Chaudhuri, filmmaker, photographer and activist, is a “leading director and voice for female empowerment” (Tribeca Film Festival). Her work has won over 25 awards including The Tribeca Film Festival 2019 Disruptor Award, Best Picture and Best Director at the Los Angeles Independent Film Festival, two Gold Lions at Cannes Festival of Creativity, and Best Film at the CNN 2018 Expose Awards (https://www.indrani.com/bio). Indrani is also a fashion photographer whose photographs have been featured in top publications including The New York Times, Vogue, VanityFair, Rolling Stone, Harper’s Bazaar and more. She’ll exhibit her many film and video projects that tackle the devaluation and marginalization of women throughout the world.

2:45-3:45pm: Dr. Sakeena Yacoobi, Founder and CEO of Afghan Learning Centre, has helped make health services and education accessible for women and children. “For more than twenty years, Dr. Sakena Yacoobi has risked her life to teach women and children in Afghanistan. In the face of a brutally oppressive Taliban regime, she secretly used education to reclaim Islam” (https://tanenbaum.org/peacemakers-in-action-network/meet-the-peacemakers/sakena-yacoobi/). Dr. Yacoobi holds many awards, including the Sunhak Peace Prize (2017), the Harold W. McGraw Prize in Education (2016) and was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
