In this training, participants will meet for two 2-hour sessions with the York County Literacy Council’s Family Literacy Coordinator. Participants will be instructed in the different  storytelling techniques that inspire the love of reading in children.

The course is free to all District 7390 Rotary Members.  The course, instructor’s time, copies, and refreshments will be provided free of charge by the York County Literacy Council. Every participant is asked to pay for their “kit”, $25, which is yours to keep.  Your kit contains books and materials to get you started as a Guest Storyteller. The Rotary Club of York and the York County Literacy Council consider your participation as a Guest Storyteller in the Reach Out & Read program a great benefit in our efforts to break the cycle of illiteracy.

Upon completion, participants will be asked to be Guest Storytellers, reading to children at participating medical practices including Family First Health locations. When opportunity permits, we encourage volunteers to teach parents and caregivers these interactive techniques that inspire the love of learning and make reading fun.

Each participant will receive a Guest Storyteller’s “Kit” containing:
  • Set of children’s books
  • Craft materials
  • Helpful hints to share with parents and caregivers
