Learn to Live

Yanti Turang is a registered nurse and the executive director and founder of LearnToLive, a non-profit organization that provides healthcare, health education and sustainable water programs to remote areas in Indonesia, Laos and South Africa. Before attending nursing school, Yanti was the lead singer of an indie band, which frequently toured the United States. After surviving Hurricane Katrina, Yanti decided to make a radical change. She moved back to Melbourne, Australia and completed her Bachelor of Nursing degree from LaTrobe University. As Yanti progressed through her nursing degree, she began to notice the prevalence of health disparities around the world. It was particularly noticeable among communities in North Sulawesi, Indonesia, where her Father was raised and much of her family still reside. Recognizing the need for healthcare and education, Yanti founded LearnToLive in 2011. Since then, LearnToLive has seen over 5,000 patients in Indonesia, built five rainwater catchment systems throughout North Sulawesi, trained nearly 20 Laotian clinicians in ultrasound practices, facilitated capacity building workshops to Community Care Workers in the Ofafa Valley, South Africa and taught reproductive health education to communities in New Orleans, Laos and South Africa.
