David Hannan presented the Service Above Self award plaque to Kevin Mooney. Kevin received the recognition in the fall of 2021.

Service Above Self Presentation
 
Dave Hannan presented Kevin Mooney, our most recent Service Above Self recipient, a plaque. The plaque was delayed.
 
Polio Update
Dave was sorry to report a case of polio in Malawi. Africa had been declared polio free. The three-year old girl may have received the virus from someone who brought it from Pakistan.
 
Donor Advised Fund
Dave discussed the Donor Advised Fund (DAF), recently established by the Newark Rotary Board of Directors. The DAF is a way for people to make contributions, which may be tax deductible, to a fund which can support local charities and nonprofit organizations. The Rotary Foundation established account #723 for Newark Rotary. To some degree, the board makes recommendations on the investments and can request distributions. For example, money for a scholarship money can go directly to the college of the recipient. Dave referenced an article which describes the well-being one feels in making donations. Some other pointers: Contributions to the DAF from an IRA do not qualify as a qualified charitable distribution. Donations do not generate Paul Harris Fellow points. However, the fee on the account goes towards points for PHF for the club. The club is working on establishing a 501(c) (3) and both can work in tandem. Link to contribution form.
 
 
 
 
Habitat for Humanity
JJ Cotter discussed the current build on Pearl St. Interior work is being done on the house now.  Insulation, plumbing, lighting, etc. are complete. Now the District Simplified Grant and Newark Rotary are working to acquire the front porch for the house. JJ thanked the club for their support. The family that is moving already completed 80% of their required sweat equity. There is no move-in date yet. Habitat for Humanity is looking for new land in Lyons or Newark. All land in the past has been donated.
