Pet therapy dogs are making a difference to patients in Allen County.
The PAWS program began at Lima Memorial Hospital in 1991, and now has 17 dogs bringing their wagging tails and smiles to the patients. Helen Bibler, the Director of Lima Memorial Therapy Dogs told us that the dogs do a great job at helping the people talk about their issues and relax. "They are very calming for children and adults." In addition, the dogs participate in reading programs at local elementary schools and libraries, and are great listeners. "Max puts his head on the kids' lap when they read to him. It is very fulfilling to see the kids read to the dogs. They don't want to read to me, but they always want to read to the dogs."
If you'd like to help with the Pet Therapy program, any dog is welcome as long as it's calm, likes people and understands basic obedience.
Helen and her co-worker Paula Reese brought their therapy dogs, Max and Sadie to the meeting.
Also at Monday's meeting, Keith Horner exchanged his red badge for his blue badge.
And President-Elect John Ficorilli reminded us that August is membership month and we are encouraged to bring guests with us to introduce them to Rotary.
