Elmbrook Rotary Tutoring Program Starts Up at CWA

Since 2008, Elmbrook Rotary has had a strong partnership with Capitol West Academy (CWA), a University of  Wisconsin Milwaukee (UWM) Independent Charter School, and has provided tutoring to students. Though the literacy project started with a tutoring program, the scope quickly expanded to include other programs including:“Diane’s Dictionary” distribution, summer reading program support and Elmbrook Rotary Club sponsorship of the spelling bee competition at Capitol West Academy.

Over two dozen Rotarians take part in the tutoring program for individuals and groups of children twice a week and during the school day.  The school’s enrollment is over 220 students, grades K4-8.  Approximately 80 percent of the students qualify for the Department of Public Instruction free/reduced lunch program. CWA celebrates the 100 percent annual attendance at parent/teacher conferences and the highest parent satisfaction rating among all of the UWM Independent Charter Schools.

This years tutors include: Kathy Becker, Marie Owens, Bonnie Bertram, John Allen, Greg Bonk, Wally Smanski, Erik Moeser, Jan Constable, Darcy Constable, Jo Gould, Jeannie Bon, Kathy Jungen, Doug Jacobson, and Janie Jacobson. New tutors in the program include: Ralph Gould, Jack Nelson, Mary Krauss, Phyllis Blodgett, and Yvonne Zalewski. We also have 3 non-Rotarian seniors helping including Don Hill, Sue Hill, and Jan Komar.
