Rotary Community Kitchen Proposed Project (Motion to be voted on by the club on May1 2013)

The Shatford Centre's main floor classroom in the south-west corner is being converted to a commercial community kitchen. The room is adjacent to the Shatford Auditorium and is 768 sq ft in size. The capital budget for the kitchen is $220,000. The proposal is for the Penticton Rotary and Okanagan School of the Arts, Shatford Centre to raise $110,000 each for this project.

This commercial kitchen will serve the community through:

  • Culinary Art Classes through the Okanagan School of the Arts;
  • Life Style Enhancement & Wellness Classes;
  • Special occasions, such as: Banquets, Celebrations of Life, Reunions, Weddings;
  • Annual Events - Festivals, Concessions, Fundraisers, Dinners will become a tradition at the Shatford Centre;
  • Custom Celebrations for birthdays, anniversaries, art and Christmas parties;
  • Programming meals that will enhance experiences for students in the Okanagan School of the Arts classes and workshops;
  • Expanding children's programs by adding culinary components through Creativity Camp, which is a youth driven creativity program for children that has been part of the Okanagan School of the Arts for the last 7 years;
  • Rentals to farmers, caterers, organizations & entrepreneurs, to rent the kitchen to process their food and create local food products;
  • Kitchen & venue rental for chefs, restaurant owners and caterers;
  • Collaborative fundraising opportunities for community organizations.

NOTE: During the two years that the Okanagan School of the Arts has been operating the Shatford Centre, there has been considerable community demand for meeting, event and conference facilities. This demand continues to increase. Food is an important part of community gatherings and we are pleased to be moving forward with fundraising for this important community resource.
