There are big changes coming to STRIVE this year that I want to share with you and hope you'll join me once again as a mentor for these wonderful students at the high school.
1. Next month, we are welcoming sophomores in STRIVE, meaning that most STRIVE students will be with STRIVE two full school years. This is quite a change and is in response to requests from mentors, teachers and counselors who hope that we can have a greater impact on the lives of these students. We expect to have
20-30 students in STRIVE next month.
2. We are encouraging a 2:1 or 2:2 ratio of mentors to students. This allows the mentor the freedom to miss a meeting without feeling they are letting their student down, and provides the student an even deeper experience with their mentors. With that ratio, I am looking for 25-45 mentors! There's never been a more important time for you to be a mentor.
3. We are adding brief, but well-timed and important training updates throughout the year for mentors, helping you understand the teenage mind, and how to encourage and support your student as they go through what high school students go through in today's day and age.
4. Please consider your own involvement as a mentor, and also consider friends or colleagues you could volunteer with. The commitment is simple, 2 one-hour meetings per month. That's it. Attached is a flier you can use to consider your involvement and share with others.
5. If interested, and to learn more of the details (schedule, what a typical meeting looks like, scholarships), come to an information meeting Wednesday, May 6, Main Forum at SAHS. The parent/student info meeting starts at 6:00.
Mentors are invited to attend. The mentors-only portion of the meeting is 6:45-7:15.
If you are unable to attend the info meetings, or have additional questions, please contact Brent Voight, STRIVE Coordinator, at brentv@usfamily.net and 651.470.5269.
