On Saturday July 13th Rotarians gathered near the Caboose. To assist Sergeant Grant Snyder and his wife prepare breakfast for the homeless in the ares.  During the summer these folks sleep under bridges, in the train shelters or even on the trains. Sergeant Snyder spoke to our club in March. There were 14 of us:
  • Jon Barnett
  • Ryan Wilson, new member
  • Ryan Flynn, Rotaract
  • Jim Platt
  • Sam Thompson
  • Sharon Chandler
  • Toshie Metzger
  • Ian Colville
  • Sasha Colville, Ian’s 9 year old daughter
  • Dan Hennen
  • Tom Winninger
  • Lynne Winninger, Tom’s wife
  • Sharon Chandler
  • Ann Platt
We gathered about 7:30 . Set up a pop up tent and start the 2 griddles to cook potatoes and sausage patties. Once folks started gathering we prepared the scrambled eggs. One of the griddles was purchased by our Rotary club. Not sure how many folks were served, but I’m guessing at least 50.  Sgt Snyder said that it was light but the police had dispersed many of the folks away from the light rail tracks as there was a conference in town. After serving those that were around, Snyder along with his wife Melanie and Hennen, Metzger and the Winningers went mobile with food to search out other people in need. The Winningers told me that it was incredibly enlightening and glad they had the opportunity to participate in that portion of the project.

It was the consensus of all that we do this again...maybe quarterly or even monthly.  Snyder talked about doing a Bar-B-Q which all were excited about doing.  He will be sending me some dates. Hopefully, we can schedule another event. It was a great morning of “Service Above Self”
