The program speaker at the Sept. 6 Rotary Club of Edina meeting was Dr. John Wald from Mayo Clinic. He spoke about "Mayo Clinic—Destination Medical Center." 
 
We heard about several upcoming Rotary events and activities, including the Edina Rotary Foundation Fundraiser & Gala "Rotary's Got Talent!" Check the calendar in The Barker or on the website for more info on all the events this fall!

Bill McReavy did the invocation at the Sept. 6 meeting and Katy Campbell introduced several guests.
 
There were a number of announcements at the meeting:
 
  • The September Rotary Happy Hour/Vocational Development Group took place on Sept. 5 at The Mezz.
  • Our Youth Exchange students from Austria and Russia have arrived.
  • The first Rotaract meeting is at 6 p.m. Sept.12 at The Mezz. Prospective members need to be from 18 to 30 years of age. For more information, contact Sam Thompson.
  • Remember that the Fundraiser & Gala is Sep. 29. Time to get your tickets if you haven’t already!
  • There will be a number of auction items available online next week for the Gala. At next week’s meeting, there will be a demonstartion of how to view and bid on the items. Some of the items include an overnight at the Edina Westin and a flight with former Rotarian Jim Roberts.
  • The Edina Rotary is sponsoring a blood drive on Oct. 25 at the Edina Country Club. Please RSVP online or see Katy Campbell for more information.
  • There is a fundraising event on Oct. 20.  It is a motorcycle/automobile tour along the river plus a BBQ. The fee will be $25 per wheel. Details to follow from Gerry Norton.

  • Michael Stanzak—PHF+6 (PHS)
Shelly Loberg introduced our speaker, Dr. John Wald of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester.  He is in the Department of Radiology specializing in Neuroradiology. He is also a professor. Since 2013, he has been the Medical Director for Public Affairs and Marketing.
 
Dr. Wald opened up by thanking everyone for making him feel very welcome right when he walked in the room. Dr. Wald spoke on a number of topics:
 
  • Huge levels of investment including $3.5 billion from the Mayo Clinic and $2.1 billion of private investment for the Destination Medical Center in Rochester, $144 million expansion in Jacksonville and $600 million for Scottsdale.  
  • The Integrated Medical Practice approach at Mayo: Clinical Practice, Education and Research
  • The amazing scale of the Mayo Clinic where they see 1.4 to 1.5 million patients per year and perform 75,000 to 80,000 surgeries across the three campuses
  • The Mayo Clinic is among the safest medical providers in the world
Dr. Wald also answered a number of questions regarding the zip rail; the upcoming Ken Burns documentary Sept. 25 and 26 on PBS; and patient-centered approach including scheduling integrated care. He also answered questions about the two keys to reducing healthcare costs: get Americans to live healthier lifestyles and achieve early intervention in health problems.
 
Dave Phillips thanked the speaker and John Flynn reminded us that next week’s speaker is District Governor Irene Kelly.
