Michael W. Pirtle is the Chief Judge of the Nebraska Court of Appeals. After graduating from Creighton Prep High School in 1971, he earned his B. A. in Business from Midland Lutheran College (now known as Midland University), in Fremont, NE in 1975, and he is a 1978 graduate of the University of Nebraska - College of Law. He was in private practice in Omaha for 33 years before his appointment to the Court of Appeals by then-Governor Dave Heineman in 2011. He was retained in office by the voters in the Second Judicial District in 2014 and 2020.
 
Prior to his appointment to the bench, Judge Pirtle was an experienced trial lawyer concentrating his practice in the areas of civil litigation and insurance defense and was rated " AV" in the Martindale - Hubbell Law Directory. He was also a trained mediator, a member of the Nebraska Association of Trial Attorneys and the Nebraska Defense Counsel Association. In 2005 and 2006, Judge Pirtle was a finalist for openings on the Douglas County District Court bench. He is a member of the Omaha Bar Association as well as the Nebraska State Bar Association where he served as the Chair of the NSBA House of Delegates October 2007-08. In addition, Judge Pirtle also served as a referee on behalf of the Nebraska Supreme Court in attorney discipline cases and was the Chair of the Bar Association's Advisory Committee, which issued ethical opinions to lawyers throughout the state.
