Image This last Thursday, October 24, speaker and author Anne Elizabeth Denny presented to our club. Anne wrote the book My Voice, My Choice, which is a practical guide to writing a meaningful healthcare directive.

Anne is passionate about end-of-life decisions as a result of her own story about her mom's twenty year saga of suffering with Alzheimer's disease and the challenges that situation created because of inadequate preparation on end-of-life decisions. She shared the most important steps in creating a health care directive. One of the most important steps is choosing a health care agent wisely. The agent you chose must have character and be willing to make these tough decisions. She reminded us to make sure to ask permission before selecting your agent. Another step Anne shared with us was writing a meaningful, well-written, instructive directive. This directive should be more than just a check box. Finally she shared that walking this plan through with people is important and that picking a good time and place to discuss this with loved ones is critical to effectively communicating your wishes.
