May 10, 2014 12:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.
For several years, our club has helped get the food collected by the EP Mail Carriers to the PROP Food Shelf. In the past, the food drive has brought in about 25,000 pounds of food each year for PROP. Help will be needed from about 12:30 until about 3 to receive food at the Immanuel Lutheran parking lot from the mail trucks. We will then transport it to PROP. So 2-3 people with SUV's or vans will be needed during this time. Later, from around 3 or so until about 5:30 or 6 we will need a few volunteers to help at the EP Post Office to take bags of food from the mail trucks and load them into pallet boxes for transport to PROP. One driver (John Urbanski) will take filled pallet boxes from the Post Office to PROP. When you sign up, please indicate in the notes are what task (and time) you are committing to. MANY THANKS. This is a super event for getting the actions of Rotarians before the community. Rich |

Sandhya discusses Nari Gunjan, an NGO providing life skills and training for women in Bihar, India
Jun. 19, 2014
We are pleased to welcome Sandhya Gupta from the Bloomington Rotary club to speak to us again regarding the important work she does in India on the Nari Gunjan project. From the NariGunjan.org website: Nari Gunjan is a non-profit, non-governmental organization, unaffiliated with any religious group. It provides education, literacy, vocational training, healthcare, advocacy and life skills for girls/women who are part of the Dalit community ("the Untouchables"), and living in the state of Bihar, the most destitute area of India. These girls/women fall into the lowest rung of India's caste ladder, and are known as the "Musahars" ("rat-eaters"). The Musahars are landless and assetless; yet their livelihoods depend on agricultural work. Their literacy rate is absymally low (only .9%). Until now, little attention has been paid to their education, health, or sanitation. Nari Gunjan helps these girls/women grow in a way they never thought possible. Redefining Education in India: Shifting the Focus from Teaching to Learning Sandhya Gupta has been experimenting with ways to shift the focus of education from teaching to learning, especially with young learners. She is deeply involved in creating spaces and setting up environments which encourage learning, as opposed to teaching. Together with her husband, she is realizing the dream of a learning center, which is a space for curious and creative minds to experiment and explore the world around them. They have also been working with local schools to establish one room libraries to encourage reading and learning in Himachal Pradesh. Her latest project is Aavishkaar, the center for learning with special focus in making science and math fun, easy and accessible to the students in her community. Her presentation will focus on her learnings in this field. Sandhya Gupta with her husband, Sarit Sharma currently leads Aavishkaar, a center for learning and livelihood training. She headed Sambhaavnaa - Institute of Public Policy & Politics near Palampur in Himachal before coming to Aavishkaar. She also worked as as a technologist in a semiconductor manufacturing company for several years. She has a PhD in Electrical Engineering from Iowa State University, IA, USA. Her involvement with the community and the desire to serve led her to another Masters in Public Affair from Humphrey Institute, University of Minnesota, MN, USA. As a Rotarian, she and her husband have been involved with the issues of clean water, health and education in marginalized communities in Himachal and Bihar. She spends most of her time in a village near Palampur and loves to cook, bird-watch and dance with her 11yr old daughter! |
