Rotary Minute

After a historic year during which transmission of the wild poliovirus vanished from Nigeria and the continent of Africa, the crippling disease is closer than ever to being eradicated worldwide, said top health experts at Rotary’s third annual World Polio Day event on 23 October in New York City.

Polio eradication is progressing in Afghanistan and Pakistan. In Afghanistan, cases dropped from 28 in 2014 to 13 so far this year. In Pakistan, transmission of the disease dropped dramatically, from 306 cases to 38.

Five things you may not know about . . .

Bob Cowan

Cowan Financial Alliance
Director
Rotarian since January 1988

1) Soeurette and I greatly enjoy our pets and animal friends, including a 125# Labrador, deer, squirrels, goldfish, rabbits, and birds, both here and at our cabin.
2) We enjoy traveling and have been fortunate to have visited a number of countries in Europe, the Middle East, Central and South America, and most of North America.
3) I read extensively.  My reading tends toward study of historical, scientific, and financial materials.
4) With early death being a family trait, I enjoy researching alternative health and nutrition. Correcting nutritional deficits allows natural repair mechanisms a chance to remedy health problems.
5) I enjoy the people I meet at Rotary, and usually find the meetings informative.

Another Way to Win the Foundation Drawing

Join the Gambling Rotarians

Two random names (with phone numbers) will be hidden in the Wheels each week.  If you spot your name, call the other named individual and plan to attend the next meeting.  If you are both present, you will be given a chance to draw the ace of spades from the deck after the regular ticket draw.

So read your Wheels and come to the meetings! Yes--I'm talking to you!!

Congratulations everyone!

Snak Pak
Rotarians Volunteer for Kids

Our Raise the bar fundraiser netted $18,000 which was presented to Caprock High School, September 17th, to begin their Snack Shak program.
Snack Pak 4 kids received a $20,000 challenge grant from a foundation in Austin Texas. Caprock students needed to raise the matching $20,000. This timely fundraiser made it all come together for these students.  Snack Pak 4  kids plans to have Snack Shaks available in all AISD middle and high schools by the 2015 school year.

The story continues.  District 5730 Grant funds where distributed and the share allocated to the Rotary Club of Amarillo allowed us to support the launch of the Snack Shak program at Fannin Middle School.  A check for $5000.00 was presented on January 15th to the school principal Nathan Culwell.
