Our guest speaker, Pavel Fischer is a Czech independent politician, diplomat and senator who graduated from Charles University and also successfully finished Ecole Nationale d'Administration (ENA) in Paris. He served as Head of the Department of Politics in the office of the Czech president Vaclav Havel.

From 2003 - 2010 he was a Czech Ambassador to France.

Later he became the director of STEM, a non-profit institute in Prague focused on empirical sociological research and social analysis.

In 2018 he was a candidate in the Czech presidential election and finished in third place. He was subsequently elected to the Czech Senate where he holds the position of the Chair of International Committee.

He is also a member of many national and international bodies - the one most relevant for our meeting discussion - a Board member of Forum 2000 platform which was held this year in October and titled 'Recovering the Promise of 1989'. Thus he will be able not only recall the times back in 1989 but especially bring the legacy of Vaclav Havel and the Velvet revolution into broader international context.
