MEMBER PROFILE

NASSER KAVIANI

I am a senior Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) consultant, project manager and trainer with over 25 years experience. I have  project managed the development and implementation of a number of major ICT projects in a number of Pacific countries for Australian and New Zealand AID and UN. Currently I am working as an International Roaming Manager with bmobile-Vodafone, a Papua New Guinea mobile company.
I was born in Iran, completed school and university over there, then immigrated to New Zealand 40 years ago where I completed my post-graduate study, then worked for the NZ Lincoln University, Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, and Massey University. I went to PNG for a couple of years to work for an IT company but somehow stayed there for 9 years and have been living on the Gold Coast since 2010.
I am married happily to Nayer and we have 2 adult children. Our daughter Afrooz is a lawyer working for UNISEF and is posted in Bangkok Thailand. We have two lovely grand-children from Afrooz and Luke. Our Son is a writer musician and living in Melbourne. He has a lovely Aussie girl friend but no sign of getting married!
I love any sport to do with water and swim almost every day. Apart from water sports, I love biking, table tennis, soccer, and nature walks. I have travelled extensively around the world and love to do more. When I am not in front of computer, I love to do gardening, beekeeping, reading and go to movies. I also like cooking with Nayer and we make it lots of fun together.
A member of Rotary for about 16 years. Not as active a participant as I used to be, but having the Rotary's  love in my heart.
I am a member of the Gold Coast Baha'i Community and actively involved with a number of local educational and  community building/services on the Coast.

ROTARY CLUB OF SURFERS PARADISE CHARITY RACE DAY
The Rotary Club of Surfers Paradise is again organizing a Charity Race Day on the first day of the Spring Racing Carnival, Saturday 8th October 2016.  It will be held at 'The Dome' at the Gold Coast Turf Club.  Our club has supported this day for many years and President Bruce is keen to get a table of 10 together.  Cost is $70 per head and we are now building a second table.
The event is included in the club calendar on our website and you can register direct or make Bruce aware of your interest.

ROTARY CLUB OF GOLD COAST RAMBLE CHALLENGE

Get a team of four together and register for what will be a fun event.

NO PERSONAL PRIVILEGES

Frequently friends ask whether Rotarians receive special business benefits from their Rotary membership. Should Rotarians expect a special discount or some preferential service just because they are dealing with a fellow Rotarian? The answer is clearly "no." The Rotary Manual of Procedure expressly states the Rotary position on this matter. The policy, originally approved by the R.I. Board of Directors in 1933, is that in business and professional relations "a Rotarian should not expect, and far less should he/she ask for, more consideration or advantages from a fellow Rotarian than the latter would give to any other business or professional associate with whom he/she has business relations. " Over 50 years ago the concept was expressed that "true friends demand nothing of one another, and any abuse of the confidence of friendship for profit is foreign to the spirit of Rotary." On the other hand, if new or increased business comes as the natural result of friendship created in Rotary, it is the same normal development which takes place outside of Rotary as well as inside, so it is not an infringement on the ethics of Rotary membership. It is important to remember that the primary purpose of Rotary membership is to provide each member with a unique opportunity to serve others, and membership is not intended as a means for personal profit or special privileges.

WHAT DOES THE ROTARY FOUNDATION DO WITH ITS MONEY?
The Rotary Foundation spends charitable contributions on multiple programs and grants. From the eradication of POLIO to scholarships, vocational training teams, Rotary Peace Centers,
Humanitarian projects. The funds are used for programs and projects Rotarians feel passionate about. If you want detailed financial information you should check on-line at www.rotary.org and
you can see how much was spent on each program as well as operating costs. I can tell you that our Foundation is ranked as one of the best. With 1.2 million Rotarians over-seeing the funds at a
grassroots level I have all the confidence in the world that all funds through Rotary are in amazing
hands doing amazing work here and abroad.

THE ROTARY FOUNDATION SPENDS ITS MONEY IN OUR NAME TO DO GOOD IN THE WORLD

FROM LAST WEEK'S MEETING - 27th September 2016
(Scribe: Neil Jones)

Sergeant Kevin O'Brien opened the meeting advising that President Bruce could not be with us tonight with Vice President Ray Milton standing in his place.
Jim Hawkins proposed a toast to Rotary District 9640 and all Rotarians in the District.
Vice President Ray welcomed members and guests with special mention to Nancy Smith and John Curr - both back from overseas - and encouraged everyone to enjoy this primarily fellowship evening.

Chris, our caterer, provided some wonderful pre-dinner snacks and then roast pork and beef with choice of multiple vegetables. The main course was followed by sweets including cream and ice-cream. As always, a top meal and service.

Sergeant Kevin then extracted some money from all and appointed President Elect Alain and Immediate Past President Bill Rex as bunyips.
Nancy Smith won the raffle and uwe Seifert Heads and Tails.

Harold Busch introduced Andrea Simmons from the Australian Anti Ice Campaign which is temporarily operating from the offices at the Hub.

Andrea who has previously addressed our club emphasized the following key points regarding Ice:
• There are 27 new users every day in Queensland and with the drug 70/90% pure compared with an average 17% just a few years ago, it hijacks users immediately.
• It is destroying families everywhere with only 1/2% recovering from the addiction.
• Raising awareness is the only solution and they are focusing on educational workshops in schools and wherever possible in the community.
• The next major community awareness event will be at the Broadwater Parklands on 30 October.
•They are meeting with the State Education Minister this week and a meeting is being scheduled with appropriate Ministers in Canberra to present a 1,000 page business case to the Federal Government for funding of an Australia wide awareness campaign.

Andrea concluded mentioning that their previous landlord had doubled their rent forcing them to leave and they are most grateful for the use of the facilities at the Hub and presented Vice President Ray with a certificate of appreciation to Rotary Club of Broadbeach.
