President's Message
Bruce Kuhn

Hello fellow members,
Whilst President Bruce was away looking for new members this week, a very enjoyable relaxing social evening was held at the Hub.
It was a great turn out by those members able to attend and good to see a number of partners
The Anti Ice Campaign Group who are utilising the Hub at present were well represented and Andrea gave an excellent presentation on the effects of the drug ice on individuals and the subsequent consequences  this has on the community
Andrea also outlined what the group is doing to raise awareness of this drug.
She went on and thanked our club for allowing the use of the Hub which has been of great assistance to them.
I had the pleasure of accepting a Certificate of Appreciation from her
My thanks on your behalf to all of those members who assisted in putting the evening together: Kevin O’Brien who Chaired the evening as Sargent, John Kerr and Neil Jones manned the bar and Cec McPaul who collected the money as we arrived. A great effort.
Our caterer Chris provided an excellent meal including desert once again.
This year’s Broadbeach Rotary Club’s Gold Coast Police Officer of the Year Gala Dinner is fast approaching on Tuesday the 11 October next. This promises to be an excellent evening once again with numbers looking very good at this point. Please make sure you register and make payment before the night.
Pauline will have some raffle tickets for you next week and the funds raised from the raffle will go to the Monaco Street PCYC which recently celebrated it’s 40th birthday dinner which June and I had the pleasure of attending.
What a great job Sgt Linda Baade and her team continue to do for youth in our community.
We welcome President Bruce back this week.
See you next Tuesday
Ray

PAUL HARRIS--FIRST BUT NOT FIRST

Was Paul Harris the first president of a Rotary club? No. Was Paul Harris the first president of Rotary International? Yes.

There is an easy explanation to this apparent contradiction. Although Paul Harris was the founder and organizer of the first Rotary club in Chicago in 1905, the man selected to be the first president was one of the other founding members, Silvester Schiele. By the year 1910 there were 16 Rotary clubs, which linked up as an organization called the National Association of Rotary Clubs. A couple of years later the name was changed to International Association of Rotary Clubs as Rotary was organized in Winnipeg, Canada, and then in England, Ireland and Scotland. In 1922 the name was shortened to Rotary International. When the first organization of Rotary clubs was created in 1910, Paul Harris was selected as the first president. He served in this position for two years from 1910 until 1912. Thus, the founder of the Rotary idea, who declined to be president of the first club, became the first president of the worldwide organization, Rotary International.

The Rotary Foundation Weekly

WHAT IS A ROTARY FOUNDATION SUSTAINING MEMBER?
A Rotary Foundation Sustaining Member is an individual who personally contributes US$100 or more each Rotary year to the Annual Fund. These contributions also count toward Paul Harris Fellow, Multiple Paul Harris Fellow, Paul Harris Society, Major Donor, and club recognition.

After donating US$100.00 per year for 10 Rotary years, the donor becomes a Paul Harris Fellow. In 2015/2016 we had 4 Rotary Foundation Sustaining Members in our Club. In District 9640 we have 4 100% Sustaining Member Clubs - Hope Island, Murwillumbah Central, Nerang and Parkwood - where every member of the club has made a contribution of US$100.
At the current exchange rate, you too can be a Rotary Foundation Sustaining Member for A$2.60 per week. How many Sustaining Members will we have in 2016/2017 and will you be one of them?

FROM LAST WEEK'S MEETING - 30th August 2016
(Scribe: Tony Lewis)
Having a well-deserved rest, President Bruce handed over to Sergeant Bob Jordan to chair the night’s meeting.

Sergeant Bob introduced Treasurer Peter Dimond to propose the toast for the night.
Peter proposed a toast to “Fathers” noting that the oldest father recorded was at the age of 92 years and 10 months, and the person who has fathered the most children was Genghis Kahn said to be many hundreds.

Members Reports
Uwe Seifert advised that he has arranged a night at the German Club to be held on Tuesday 25th October (during Octoberfest). The cost will be $30 per person. There will be a 2 course meal and a live band.

Les Bulluss gave an overview of his recent trip to Las Vegas to attend the National Native American Law Enforcement Association (NNALEA) conference - his third year.
Les was honoured to be part of the Flag ceremony
Some issues discussed at the conference included:
  • Cultural support for district Indian officers
  • There were 550 tribes of which has 400 police departments
  • Tribes rely on funding
  • Counterfeit medicine
  • Community and youth programs

Almoner Bill Waller gave an overview of his role as Almoner and members he had contacted during the week.
Bill advised that he would contact members who are absent from a meeting to see if they are ok, and asked members to advise him if they are ill and if they are going away for a period of time.
Bill also advised of some members who he contacted during the week. These included Pauline Armstrong, Frank Adorjan, Keith Hawton and Cec McPaul who all had been ill but are doing well now.

Ray Milton advised he had attended the Queensland Police Service medal presentation where President Bruce Kuhn was presented with his 31 year service medal. The Broadbeach Rotary Club was also recognised at the ceremony.
Ray also advised that the Police Officer of the Year function will be held on 11th October. To date there have been 11 nominations for Police Officer of the Year, 1 nomination for Unit Station and 1 nomination for Civilian Support.

Changes to Club Bylaws
John Harding gave an overview of the changes to the Club Bylaws
The main reason for these changes was to satisfy the Gold Coast City Council in regard to negotiations with the Council for the lease of the Hub.
A copy of the changed Bylaws had been circulated to members. There were no questions from the members
At a meeting of the Club at the Crowne Plaza Hotel on 30th August 2016 the following motion was put to the membership:
“That the Rotary Club of Broadbeach Bylaws dated 30th August 2016 be adopted by the Club and replace the Bylaws dated 19th November 2013”
Moved: John Harding Seconded Bob Jordan - Carried unanimously.

Harold Busch gave an overview of “Donor Life” a project of District Governor Michael Irving regarding Organ Donation.
Harold reported on a recent Public relations summit that he attended and highlighted several points made at the summit including:
  • Average age in Rotary is 71 years, therefore a problem and the need for younger members
  • The need for less formality
  • Take advantage of changes recently made. For example weekly meetings no longer a requirement
  • The image of Rotary is: Old, Grey, Pale and Stale” therefore time to improve the image
  • There is a need for outcomes
  • There is a need to bring Rotary to the notice of the public
  • A Rockhampton Rotary Club was down to 3 members. Increased to 35 within 12 months due to changes such as no meal, 1.5hour weekly meetings.
  • Younger members are better suited to satellite Clubs.
  • Fully subsidise new members for the first 12 months

Sergeant session
Sergeant Bob was ably assisted by bunyips Neil Jones and Uwe Seifert.
Bob was able to settle a few scores with all the past sergeants present. This together with group fines set a Club record on a per capita basis, for a Sergeants fine session, of $67.70

WEEKLY LAUGHS
A woman was getting swamped with calls from strangers. A billing service had launched an 800 number that was identical to hers.
When she called to complain, she was told to get a new number. "I've had mine for twenty years," she pleaded. "Couldn't you change yours?"
The company refused, so she said, "Fine. From now on, I'm going to tell everyone who calls that their bill is paid in full."
The company got a new number the next day.

While visiting Annapolis, a lady tourist noticed several students on their hands and knees assessing the courtyard with pencils and clipboards in hand.
"What are they doing?" she asked the tour guide.
"Each year," he replied with a grin, "the upperclassmen ask the freshmen how many bricks it took to finish paving this courtyard."
When they were out of earshot of the freshmen, the curious lady asked the guide: "So, what's the answer?"
The guide replied: "One."

The rain was pouring down. And there standing in front of a big puddle outside the pub, was an old Irishman, drenched, holding a stick with a piece of string dangling in the water.A passer-by stopped and asked, "What are you doing?"
"Fishing" replied the old man....
Feeling sorry for the old man, the gent said, "Come in out of the rain and have a drink with me."
In the warmth of the pub, as they sip their whiskeys, the gentleman cannot resist asking, "So how many have you caught today?"
"You're the eighth" said the old man.

I'm not the easiest guy in the world to get along with. So when our anniversary rolled around, I wanted my wife to know how much I appreciated her tolerating me for the past 20 years. I ordered flowers and told the florist to enclose a card that read, 'Thanks for putting up with me so long.'
When my wife got the delivery, she called me at work.
"Just where do you think you going?" she asked.
"What do you mean?" I said.
She read the card aloud as the florist had written it: "Thanks for putting up with me. So long."

In California over the weekend, a woman gave birth in a Barnes & Noble bookstore. Apparently she did this in the New Releases section.
I thought you were going to say she gave birth in the C-section.
