Dear all,

The Xmas spirit is alive and well and this week the Board, in their generosity on your behalf, agreed to provide $1000 to the E Club to go towards purchasing presents to foster kids who would otherwise have had nothing, and another $1000 to Emma McTaggart for her Xmas hampers to the homeless.  You may remember Emma from last year who gained lots of media attention for her efforts, her guest speaker role with the family at our Club, which has resulted in Andrew becoming a member and older sister Sarah attending RYTS this weekend.  How good is it to share the Rotary love!!  Stay tuned, there may be more in Santa's sack which may be linked to the Xmas party.........

Our Scooter project is going gang busters under Robyn's guidance with Hope Island on board to assist, a presentation pending to Gold Coast, and our intention to source other Clubs to become involved.  Today Broadbeach and Burleigh Scooters, tomorrow the world!!! (Or at least more of the Gold Coast to start).  It's also checkup and cake delivery to our recipients so if you are a mentor, and the more the merrier, please pass on the Clubs best wishes when you visit.

Who knows, I know of a large shed which would be a very handy 'hub' to expand the scooter project involving other Clubs.....

Guest speaker Renee Garske this week to discuss her Group Study Exchange to Pennsylvania, and just this week we've secured Mark Reaburn, Mr Schoolies himself, to be our final guest speaker the following week .  Two great speakers to finish off leading to the Xmas party!!

See you there.

Bruce

I was born at Ferntree Gully, where we lived for a short time after which we lived at Highett then to Leongatha and after six years we moved back to Burwood in Melbourne from where I went into nursing at Prince Henry’s hospital.
I met my late husband at a football match at Waverly and in the late 1970s we moved to the then new Saraji Mine in central Queensland.  Initially we lived in the motel in Moranbah until the company built our home – we were the first permanent residents in Dysart and I had the role of secretary to the Manager of the mine.  We lived there for a couple of years until the management crew moved on.
We returned to Melbourne and after working at Cabrini for three years we moved to Sydney so my husband could work on the construction of a gantry crane at Botany Bay, his company then moved us to Hobart after the bridge collapsed and I worked in a surgery in Sandy Bay.
In 1985 we were offered work in Thailand on an Australian aid project, 90 kilometres south of Chiang Mai at Mae Moh, the largest open cut mine located 35 kilometres from Lampang where we lived in a home won in a Mahjong game by our next door neighbor, the local doctor.
I worked as the administration person for a team of “Australian Experts” assisting the Thai managers of the mine on safety processes and up-to-date processing of lignite.  At that time a number of the very colourful hill tribe people came to Lampang daily for their food, sold at the local market.  With no refrigeration all meat had to be bought as early as possible and there was no fresh milk.
I was the only non Thai woman working on the mine which had its drawbacks, however we did have a golf course in the middle of the mine, divided by the haul road.
In Lampang all rent is paid in cash each month and I would be driven with a suitcase full of bank notes to each house rented by our team accompanied by a local village headman with a gun.   In fact our fuel, stationery were all paid with cash.  Another component of my work role was to ensure that all our Visas were up to date each six months requiring driving to Chiang Mai and a flight to Singapore, the nearest Embassy outside Thailand to obtain updates.
After seven years in and out of Thailand I returned to Melbourne where I met Peter and studied at Monash obtaining a couple of degrees.
I was teaching at night at Frankston TAFE and working during the day with PFD foods Head Office when we decided to move to Queensland in 2002.  I transferred to the Brisbane office of PFD initially and then to Tweed Heads.  I next spent a year teaching full time at TAFE in Southport
In 2006 we purchased management rights at Oxenford where we managed 147 units consisting of townhouses and units over six hectares of lawns and gardens which we maintained along with the administration and maintenance.
To slow down I returned to TAFE to study aged care and on my graduation, a placement was offered at Ashmore Retreat where I am still employed.

We have received an invitation from Tauranga Club to join them the formal presentation of the ophthalmology equipment to Marine Reach and the naming of The Rotary Foundation Ophthalmology Clinic aboard MV Pacific Reach on Sunday 5 February 2017. Broadbeach and Kasaoka and our respective Districts joined Tauranga in a Global Grant to fund this project.
Our Rotarian friends from Tauranga are planning a full weekend of activities and have also extended an invitation to members of our joint Sister Club, Kasaoka Japan.to attend.
If you are interested in joining other members of the club on this visit to Tauranga please contact Neil Jones who will keep you advised as the program for the three day weekend is formalised.
Neil will probably be travelling to and from New Zealand on the Friday and Tuesday either side of the weekend activities but you are of course free to combine further travel activity both before and after the event as you choose.

VISIT TO SISTER CLUB KASAOKA JAPAN 1/2 April 2017
Kasaoka Club has advised us that they will be holding celebrations over the weekend of 1/2 April 2017 to commemorate its 60th anniversary and will be extending invitations to members from Sister Clubs Tauranga and Broadbeach to join them. President Bruce has already indicated he, Louise and their daughter will attend. President Elect Alain has also indicated he and Kerry are likely to attend.
While we don't yet have full details, now is the time to begin some firm planning and we need to know how many members are interested in joining the Broadbeach travel group.
Tauranga is already well advanced in planning its travel itinerary and are keen for Broadbeach members to join them at some stage apart from the two days in Kasaoka.
Neil Jones is coordinating arrangements for our club so please let him know as soon as possible if you are interested and whether or not you wish to travel independently or as part of a Broadbeach Rotary group.

NOVEMBER IS FOUNDATION MONTH

This year we are celebrating 100 years of our Rotary Foundation doing good in the world.

We have a goal of 100% participation in the 100th year.
In a nutshell, this goal aims to have every member of our club make a personal contribution to The Rotary Foundation in this 2016/2017 Rotary year.
Ideally, each member will contribute a minimum of US$26.50 (the amount of the initial donation by Arch Klumph 100 years ago) which will also enable us to meet the worldwide challenge.
Members have been provided with details of this challenge and a personal invoice at recent meetings or will receive them by post shortly. Please consider this favorably and bear in mind:

"Every dollar committed means that somewhere, someone will enjoy better health, or economic or educational opportunities that otherwise would not exist. Every dollar committed means that someone, somewhere, will live a better life. They will be able to read and write; or be able to draw clean water from a newly dug well, or have their disabilities lessened so they can earn a living and become self-sufficient. They can see their children immunized against life-threatening or crippling diseases.”

- Rajendra K. Saboo, speech to 1996 Asia Regional Conference, Bangkok, Thailand

FROM LAST WEEK'S MEETING - 22 NOVEMBER 2016
(Scribe Neil Jones)

Sergeant Russ Hutchison opened the meeting and proposed a toast to the memory of the crew of HMAS Sydney which was sunk off the Western Australian coast 75 years ago with the loss of all 645 crew members. The wreck of the Sydney was re-discovered in 2008.

Russ then introduced President Bruce who welcomed the 26 members in attendance and outlined that the evening would be devoted to the AGM and a Club Assembly.

Secretary Bob conducted the Annual General Meeting including the adoption of the 2015/2016 financial accounts and auditor's report (which had previously been circulated to all members) and the election of the following executive officers to join President Elect Alain Charles on the Board for 2017/2018:
President Nominee 2018/2019:  Pauline Armstrong
Vice President:  Neil Jones
Secretary:        Tony Lewis
Treasurer:         Peter Dimond
Election of Directors was defered to a date to be fixed at the request of PE Alain.

Silver Circle winner was Cec McPaul. Raffle winners Peter Tomlinson and Harold Busch (no Heads and Tails).

Sausage Sizzle Chair, Malcolm Daviess advised the meeting of the very successful sizzles last Friday & Saturday and thanked all those who participate and particularly John Curr and Uwe Seifert without whose untiring efforts we would be unable to continue this very important weekly fundraising activity. The efforts of John & Uwe were acknowledged by acclamation.

President Bruce opened the assembly indicating the Hub (how we use it, security, and current occupancy of the rear buildings) had been raised by many members and was undoubtedly a contentious matter. Bruce emphasised that everyone was entitled to a view and we need to accept and respect that. Bruce then asked John Curr to open discussion,

John outlined a series of recent incidents at the Hub highlighting that he would no longer be prepared to work on sausage sizzles or the Scooter Project unless firm conditions of occupancy were applied forthwith to AAIC and strictly enforced. John outlined the minimum conditions that the Board should impose and these were acknowledged and supported by all present.
Secretary Bob Jordan then read from a letter from Uwe which raised many of the same issues as John but adding that AAIC should be given a termination date for their occupancy.

Of 10 speakers on the issue noted by the scribe, all but three indicated that there should be some definitive term of occupancy included with the conditions outlined to AAIC and while no show of hands was called for, the wishes of the meeting were clearly evident.

With time exhausted, President Bruce called a halt to discussion indicating that the Board which was to meet that evening would consider the views expressed and promised John Curr that all his recommendations would be implemented.

At a rent-a-boat company, the caller said into the microphone: "Boat 99, your hour is up, please head in."
An employee walks up to him and says: "We only have 75 boats, there is no boat 99, sir."
The caller then said into the microphone: "Boat 66, are you in trouble?"

Favorite Police Emergency Calls:

Dispatcher: Nine-one-one
Caller: Hi, is this the police?
Dispatcher: This is 911. Do you need police assistance?
Caller: Well, I don't know who to call. Can you tell me how to cook a turkey? I've never cooked one before.

Dispatcher: Nine-one-one What is the nature of your emergency?
Caller: I'm trying to reach nine eleven but my phone doesn't have an eleven on it.
Dispatcher: This is nine eleven.
Caller: I thought you just said it was nine-one-one
Dispatcher: Yes, ma'am nine-one-one and nine-eleven are the same thing.
Caller: Honey, I may be old, but I'm not stupid.

Dispatcher: Nine-one-one What's the nature of your emergency?
Caller: My wife is pregnant and her contractions are only two minutes apart.
Dispatcher: Is this her first child?
Caller: No, you idiot! This is her husband

Dispatcher: Nine-one-one
Caller: Yeah, I'm having trouble breathing. I'm all out of breath. Darn...I think I'm going to pass out.
Dispatcher: Sir, where are you calling from?
Caller: I'm at a pay phone. North and Foster. Damn....
Dispatcher: Sir, an ambulance is on the way. Are you an asthmatic?
Caller: No
Dispatcher: What where you doing before you started having trouble breathing?
Caller: Running from the police.

I'd never had surgery, and I was nervous. "This is a very simple, noninvasive procedure," the anesthesiologist reassured me. I started to feel better until he continued, "Heck, you have a better chance of dying from the anesthesia than the surgery."
