40 years in Real Estate and 24 years in Rotary = 64 years !!
I cannot believe it as of course this is my age.
Born in the regional town of Maryborough where I had a wonderful safe childhood with loving parents and grew up with two Sisters. Both sets of grandparents also lived in the town so wonderful contact with them.
As a child growing up I attended the Central State Primary School and the Boys Secondary School. Following that I attended the Queensland Gatton College Campus where I did a degree in Agriculture. ( I had ideas of marrying a rich farmers daughter, the closest I got was to a pineapple farmers daughter !!) ) My family had a Stock and Station and general Agricultural Business in Maryborough that serviced the district and I learnt a lot during my adolescent years from my Grandfather and Father. Following the time at Gatton I went back and worked in the family business and this is where I learnt my Auctioneering skills and the Real Estate trade. Both my Father and Grandfather were Auctioneers, Real Estate Agents and Registered Valuers and I would attend with them to onsite inspections.
During my time in Maryborough I joined Rotoract and this is where I met my first wife Marie ( a primary School teacher ). We married in 1972. I went on to join Apex and had a great time in Apex.
In about 1977 I open my own Real Estate office in the coastal town of Hervey Bay which is where our family enjoyed many a Christmas holiday. It started as Bill Rex Real Estate and soon after I joined the L.J.Hooker Franchise group and traded for some 25 years and had a very enjoyable time in Hervey Bay. My career within the LJH group was substantial. Hervey Bay has grown to a vibrant Coastal City today. We brought our 3 children up in the town and we had close links with the Star of the Sea School. I was an  avid trader in real estate and enjoyed this aspect of the property industry very much. We actually build our own Commercial premises on the Esplanade in the beach side suburb of Scarness where we had our own Auction rooms. We would do about 30 Property Auctions a month and sell between 30 to 80 properties a month.
In 1997 my wife and I separated and in 1999 I moved to the Gold Coast and took over the L.J.Hooker Franchise in Broadbeach. Yes you got it right I married my divorce lawyer Barbara and we have enjoyed a wonderful and fulfilling time on the Gold Coast. Barb  currently runs her own law Practice and today I run an independent Real Estate office ( Broadbeach Real Estate) having Sold and acquired back and re sold the L.J.Hooker Broadbeach brand twice.
We have six grandchildren with my son Jamie marrying a Welsh girl and choosing to live at Barry in Wales. It is quite a nice place and he has two boys. Megan the eldest daughter lives in Sydney and they have a boy and a girl and Rebecca lives in Toowoomba and she has two girls. Their Mum also lives in Toowoomba. Rebecca is more the entrepreneur of the three children as she has no fear.
I have filled all roles in Rotary except Treasurer and it was a pleasure to be President of our Club last year. Clearly Barb and I are looking forward to retirement in the next couple of years and have recently, about 18 months ago purchased a holiday home on Lamb Island in Moreton Bay where we go most weekends to relax.

NO PERSONAL PRIVILEGES

Frequently friends ask whether Rotarians receive special business benefits from their Rotary membership. Should Rotarians expect a special discount or some preferential service just because they are dealing with a fellow Rotarian? The answer is clearly "no." The Rotary Manual of Procedure expressly states the Rotary position on this matter. The policy, originally approved by the R.I. Board of Directors in 1933, is that in business and professional relations "a Rotarian should not expect, and far less should he/she ask for, more consideration or advantages from a fellow Rotarian than the latter would give to any other business or professional associate with whom he/she has business relations. " Over 50 years ago the concept was expressed that "true friends demand nothing of one another, and any abuse of the confidence of friendship for profit is foreign to the spirit of Rotary." On the other hand, if new or increased business comes as the natural result of friendship created in Rotary, it is the same normal development which takes place outside of Rotary as well as inside, so it is not an infringement on the ethics of Rotary membership. It is important to remember that the primary purpose of Rotary membership is to provide each member with a unique opportunity to serve others, and membership is not intended as a means for personal profit or special privileges.

What $US100 can do

It is as simple as having a notebook, pencil and glue.  In Pavas, a poor district in San Jose, Costa Rica a packet of educational materials means the difference between an education and working on the street.  Most public schools in Costa Rica are under funded and lack many basic supplies, so the Rohrmoser Rotary Club, Costa Rica developed a packet of teaching materials for students and partnered with the Vancouver Rotary Club, Canada to distribute 777 packets to children in five very poor elementary schools.  US$100 buys 15 packets.  Without this project many students would not be able to continue their education and would be forced to drop out of school.

When Every Rotarian, Every Year participates, our foundation is able to continue to build a brighter future for the children of the world.

GUEST SPEAKER.
Chairman Kevin introduced speaker Jeremy Scott and gave a brief background of Jeremys history including that Jeremy had studied architecture and also was awarded the Heart Foundation Award this tear.
Jeremy explained that as a toddler he had what was then known as a hole in the heart and had an operation when he was four years old in 1977. He was told that he had to have lots of exercise; little did he know what this would lead to later in life. He moved to England in his teens and had a fairly good life running around with his mates.
During 2004 he came across an article about people cycling through Europe, he remembers thinking that would be cool however went on with his life and mates for another few years. In 2009 he saw a short film of people cycling around Europe and decided that he would try this for a few months. He made enquiries regarding the type of bike and equipment required and set about doing short rides around home slowly increasing the distance until he felt confident in his ability.
After a few months of planning and preparing he decided that instead of traveling around Europe he would attempt to cycle from London to Auckland. On the 1st of October 2011 he set off from home and his mates and headed to France. During the first weeks he made lots of mistakes and had doubts of making Auckland after traveling through minus 20 degrees in Turkey and then 45 degrees in Iran. The slide show and highlighted all the countries Jeremy travelled through including Japan, China, Malaya, Australia.
After two and a half years and 52000 klms he finally arrived in Auckland. A great story.
Chairman Kevin thanked Jeremy on behalf of all present.
PRESIDENTS SUMMING UP.
President Bruce thanked Jeremy for his very entertaining talk and wished him safe traveling in the future.
President Bruce mentioned next weeks and called on Uwe to lead the closure of the meeting with the singing of the national anthem.
