Hello fellow members,
Whilst President Bruce was away looking for new members this week, a very enjoyable relaxing social evening was held at the Hub.
It was a great turn out by those members able to attend and good to see a number of partners
The Anti Ice Campaign Group who are utilising the Hub at present were well represented and Andrea gave an excellent presentation on the effects of the drug ice on individuals and the subsequent consequences  this has on the community
Andrea also outlined what the group is doing to raise awareness of this drug.
She went on and thanked our club for allowing the use of the Hub which has been of great assistance to them.
I had the pleasure of accepting a Certificate of Appreciation from her
My thanks on your behalf to all of those members who assisted in putting the evening together: Kevin O’Brien who Chaired the evening as Sargent, John Kerr and Neil Jones manned the bar and Cec McPaul who collected the money as we arrived. A great effort.
Our caterer Chris provided an excellent meal including desert once again.
This year’s Broadbeach Rotary Club’s Gold Coast Police Officer of the Year Gala Dinner is fast approaching on Tuesday the 11 October next. This promises to be an excellent evening once again with numbers looking very good at this point. Please make sure you register and make payment before the night.
Pauline will have some raffle tickets for you next week and the funds raised from the raffle will go to the Monaco Street PCYC which recently celebrated it’s 40th birthday dinner which June and I had the pleasure of attending.
What a great job Sgt Linda Baade and her team continue to do for youth in our community.
We welcome President Bruce back this week.
See you next Tuesday
Ray

ROTARY FRIENDSHIP EXCHANGE
Members are invited to register their interest for a Rotary Friendship Exchange with a difference in 2017. This year District 9640 is embarking on an Exchange within Australia, with a planned Exchange to occur with District 9790, which is located to the north-east of Melbourne and also takes in clubs within south west New South Wales including Albury, Holbrook and Deniliquin.

The Exchange is currently programmed to occur with hosting by our District 9640 in the July/August 2017 with a visit to District 9790 in September/October.(Might even be able coincide with the AFL Grand Final). The final planning for this Exchange will depend upon the makeup of the Team and the Host Clubs. The Exchange is anticipated to be of 14 days duration in both Districts.

This type of Rotary activity is a great way of forging new Friendships and building relationships with other Rotarians.
This promises to be a great Exchange as the members of the Club’s in District 9790 are looking forward to a northern sojourn to escape the vagaries of the Victorian weather. Members of District 9640 may wish to explore areas such as Euroa, Myrtleford and Shepparton on their visit to District 9790.

Please register your interest direct with District 9640 RFE Chair, Neil Baldwin.

PAUL HARRIS--FIRST BUT NOT FIRST

Was Paul Harris the first president of a Rotary club? No. Was Paul Harris the first president of Rotary International? Yes.

There is an easy explanation to this apparent contradiction. Although Paul Harris was the founder and organizer of the first Rotary club in Chicago in 1905, the man selected to be the first president was one of the other founding members, Silvester Schiele. By the year 1910 there were 16 Rotary clubs, which linked up as an organization called the National Association of Rotary Clubs. A couple of years later the name was changed to International Association of Rotary Clubs as Rotary was organized in Winnipeg, Canada, and then in England, Ireland and Scotland. In 1922 the name was shortened to Rotary International. When the first organization of Rotary clubs was created in 1910, Paul Harris was selected as the first president. He served in this position for two years from 1910 until 1912. Thus, the founder of the Rotary idea, who declined to be president of the first club, became the first president of the worldwide organization, Rotary International.

Rotary recommits to ending polio in Nigeria

The World Health Organization has confirmed two cases of wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) in Nigeria, the first cases in the country since July 2014. After passing a year without a case of the wild poliovirus, Nigeria was removed from the list of polio-endemic countries in September 2015. These cases – from two local government areas of Borno state – occurred in July 2016.

The Government of Nigeria – in partnership with the Global Polio Eradication Initiative – will take immediate steps to respond quickly to the outbreak to prevent further spread of the disease. This response will include emergency vaccination campaigns to boost immunity in impacted and at-risk areas, and reinforced surveillance activities to ensure we detect all strains of polio. Because polio knows no borders, steps will also be taken to protect surrounding countries, to ensure all children are vaccinated and to reduce the risk of the spread of the disease.

This news is disappointing for all Rotary members - and particularly those in Nigeria - who worked so hard to help the country stop polio. However, Rotary remains steadfast and fully committed to fighting polio anywhere children remain at risk, including Nigeria and Africa.

Rotary members remain resilient in the face of challenges. Today, we roll up our sleeves and redouble our effort to rid the world of this devastating disease. Rotary members in Nigeria are already hard at work to support the outbreak response, and our network will also be tapped to quickly protect children in surrounding countries.

The World Health Organization is confident Nigeria can end polio. The program has overcome outbreaks before, and we have the tools to do so again in Nigeria. Rotary will not stop its efforts to ensure that every child is born into a polio-free world where they are safe from this paralyzing disease.

FROM LAST WEEK'S MEETING - 23rd August 2016

Vice President Ray Milton assumed the Sergeant role this week welcoming back President Bruce from his fishing sojourn on Fraser Island.

President Elect Alain Charles provided a brief history of Broadbeach Rotary Club before proposing a toast to "our fabulous club".

President Bruce welcomed all in attendance and although thanking Ray for standing in for him did not offer up any fish fillets.
Bruce mentioned receipt of a certificate of appreciation from PCYC for the books we donated to go up to the Cape and encouraged members to join him at the upcoming Surfers Paradise Race Day. (this had been circulated by Jim Hawkins via email to all members with a link to an event registration)
Details are Saturday 8 October (Caulfield Guineas day), cost $70 per person at The Dome, Bundall Racetrack.
Please let President Bruce know if you are interested in joining him on the day.

Assistant Governor David Baguley thanked the club for the recent loan of equipment and highlighted current District projects Donate Life & Paint a Purple Pinkie encouraging the club to get behind these. David also outlined an upcoming project of Gold Coast Club, the Gold Coast Ramble which is essentially a treasure hunt on foot to be held in Broadwater Parklands in 2017. A trial involving Rotary and Rotaract Clubs is to be held in Pratten Park, Broadbeach on Sunday 23 October from 11.00am and 1.00pm. To be known as the Rotary Ramble Challenge, it is open to teams of four persons and as it will be in our backyard, David has issued the challenge for our club not only to be well represented but to take out the trophy.
Mark the date in your diary & start thinking about your team now - more details shortly.

Neil Jones reported that the Sister Club Global Grant has been approved with a total budget of US$72,489 including a grant from The Rotary Foundation (TRF) of US$29,090. Our club's contribution of US$3,000 was matched 50% by TRF but more importantly, because of our good contribution record, District 9640 contributed US$3,800 of District Designated Funds which was matched 100% by TRF. Accordingly, the total off funding for this project eminating from Broadbeach was US$12,100 or A$16,335.  A great example of our Foundation at work "Doing Good in The World".

Silver Circle was drawn by Sergeant Ray and won by Andrew McTaggart.

Sergeant Ray appointed Jim Hawkins and Bill Waller as bunyips and then announced that there are not enough hugs in our world today so asked that everyone should stand and hug the person next to them. Ray then asked everyone to pay a fine for the privilege.

Raffle was won by John Harding and Heads & Tails by Kevin O'Brien.

Neil Jones introduced guest speaker, Dr Danielle Stanisic, a member of the Griffith University Satellite Club. Danielle is a highly qualified and distinguished researcher having won the Qld Premier's Award for her PhD focusing on malaria research at the QIMR. Danielle's first postdoctoral position was at New York University where she was awarded a Qantas Fellowship to examine malaria in pregnancy in PNG and was also was awarded a Centenary Medal for her distinguished service to medical research. Danielle now works with Professor Michael Good at the Institute of Glycomics at Griffith University.

Danielle spoke on progress in the hunt for a malaria vaccine and her address was most interesting and informative.
The need for a malaria vaccine is clearly evident: 40%of the world's population live in endemic areas, 214 million cases and up to 500,000 deaths (mostly children under 5 years of age and pregnant women) in 2015.
There are two broad vaccine approaches - sub unit vaccines and whole parasite vaccines. The Institute of Glycomics is developing a chemically attenuated whole parasite blood stage vaccine (PlasProtect) and following successful rodent studies and a small pilot study in humans is now preparing a larger study to examine the protective efficacy of the vaccine.

The cost to complete this next stage of evaluation is significant and beyond the capacity of the Institute. Under the leadership of PDG Graham Jones a Rotary Project Committee has been formed to raise the required funding through Rotary in Australia & New Zealand, individual and corporate philanthropy and public donations.

Neil Jones, representing Broadbeach Club, is a member of this project team and outlined the approach being taken to fund raising and the indicative support already received including endorsement from Rotarians Against Malaria and Rotary Australia Benevolent Society. A proposal for Broadbeach Club to become a project partner and to commit $5,000 to the project is currently before the Board.

WEEKLY LAUGHS
A woman was getting swamped with calls from strangers. A billing service had launched an 800 number that was identical to hers.
When she called to complain, she was told to get a new number. "I've had mine for twenty years," she pleaded. "Couldn't you change yours?"
The company refused, so she said, "Fine. From now on, I'm going to tell everyone who calls that their bill is paid in full."
The company got a new number the next day.

While visiting Annapolis, a lady tourist noticed several students on their hands and knees assessing the courtyard with pencils and clipboards in hand.
"What are they doing?" she asked the tour guide.
"Each year," he replied with a grin, "the upperclassmen ask the freshmen how many bricks it took to finish paving this courtyard."
When they were out of earshot of the freshmen, the curious lady asked the guide: "So, what's the answer?"
The guide replied: "One."

The rain was pouring down. And there standing in front of a big puddle outside the pub, was an old Irishman, drenched, holding a stick with a piece of string dangling in the water.A passer-by stopped and asked, "What are you doing?"
"Fishing" replied the old man....
Feeling sorry for the old man, the gent said, "Come in out of the rain and have a drink with me."
In the warmth of the pub, as they sip their whiskeys, the gentleman cannot resist asking, "So how many have you caught today?"
"You're the eighth" said the old man.

I'm not the easiest guy in the world to get along with. So when our anniversary rolled around, I wanted my wife to know how much I appreciated her tolerating me for the past 20 years. I ordered flowers and told the florist to enclose a card that read, 'Thanks for putting up with me so long.'
When my wife got the delivery, she called me at work.
"Just where do you think you going?" she asked.
"What do you mean?" I said.
She read the card aloud as the florist had written it: "Thanks for putting up with me. So long."

In California over the weekend, a woman gave birth in a Barnes & Noble bookstore. Apparently she did this in the New Releases section.
I thought you were going to say she gave birth in the C-section.
