President's Message

Hello fellow members,
Whilst President Bruce was away looking for new members this week, a very enjoyable relaxing social evening was held at the Hub.
It was a great turn out by those members able to attend and good to see a number of partners
The Anti Ice Campaign Group who are utilising the Hub at present were well represented and Andrea gave an excellent presentation on the effects of the drug ice on individuals and the subsequent consequences  this has on the community
Andrea also outlined what the group is doing to raise awareness of this drug.
She went on and thanked our club for allowing the use of the Hub which has been of great assistance to them.
I had the pleasure of accepting a Certificate of Appreciation from her
My thanks on your behalf to all of those members who assisted in putting the evening together: Kevin O’Brien who Chaired the evening as Sargent, John Kerr and Neil Jones manned the bar and Cec McPaul who collected the money as we arrived. A great effort.
Our caterer Chris provided an excellent meal including desert once again.
This year’s Broadbeach Rotary Club’s Gold Coast Police Officer of the Year Gala Dinner is fast approaching on Tuesday the 11 October next. This promises to be an excellent evening once again with numbers looking very good at this point. Please make sure you register and make payment before the night.
Pauline will have some raffle tickets for you next week and the funds raised from the raffle will go to the Monaco Street PCYC which recently celebrated it’s 40th birthday dinner which June and I had the pleasure of attending.
What a great job Sgt Linda Baade and her team continue to do for youth in our community.
We welcome President Bruce back this week.
See you next Tuesday
Ray

PAUL HARRIS--FIRST BUT NOT FIRST

Was Paul Harris the first president of a Rotary club? No. Was Paul Harris the first president of Rotary International? Yes.

There is an easy explanation to this apparent contradiction. Although Paul Harris was the founder and organizer of the first Rotary club in Chicago in 1905, the man selected to be the first president was one of the other founding members, Silvester Schiele. By the year 1910 there were 16 Rotary clubs, which linked up as an organization called the National Association of Rotary Clubs. A couple of years later the name was changed to International Association of Rotary Clubs as Rotary was organized in Winnipeg, Canada, and then in England, Ireland and Scotland. In 1922 the name was shortened to Rotary International. When the first organization of Rotary clubs was created in 1910, Paul Harris was selected as the first president. He served in this position for two years from 1910 until 1912. Thus, the founder of the Rotary idea, who declined to be president of the first club, became the first president of the worldwide organization, Rotary International.

The Rotary Foundation Weekly

WHAT IS A PAUL HARRIS FELLOW?

Paul Harris Fellow recognition is given in appreciation to anyone who makes a gift of US$1,000 or more cumulatively to the Annual Fund, PolioPlus Fund, or an approved global grant. The recognition consists of a certificate and pin. Other optional items include a medallion for $15. PaulHarris Fellows can also be given on behalf of someone through Foundation Recognition points or through a combination of points and outright donations.
We have 29 Paul Harris Fellows in our Club. Since the creation of the Paul Harris Fellow almost 1.5 MILLION people have become Paul Harris Fellows. Each additional contribution of US$1,000 earns a new level of recognition; PHF + 1 Sapphire, PHF + 2 Sapphires, etc.

All personal contributions to The Rotary Foundation also accrue PHF credits in the name of the individual. When the points accrual reaches 1,000 the donor automatically receives a Paul Harris Fellow and may also use the points to gift a Paul Harris Fellow to another person of their choosing or if they wish transfer the points to their club.

If you wish to know your current level of accrued PHF credits, just ask, and continue to contribute regularly to accrue further points and help our charity, The Rotary Foundation, continue "to do good in the world".

FROM LAST WEEK'S MEETING - 6th September 2016
(Scribe: Bob Jordan))

Meeting  commenced   at  6.30 with  Sergeant  Russ  vigorously  ringing the bell.
He  then   asked  John Harding  to propose  the  toast  which  John  did  with  his usual  finesse  to  the  athletes  who  are  soon  to  appear  in  the  Para  Olympic games  in  Rio. John, like most people  admires  their  courage  and  enthusiasm.

We  then had  the meal  which, was  o.k. could have  done  with  another  couple of  chickens, chased, caught and    dumped in  the  fixings. Not  the largest  offering  we have  ever had.

After  eating  President  Bruce  spoke briefly on  the  cluster meeting  he  had  attended during  the  week  and  what  an  advantage  they  appear  to  be  as   he  gets to know  how  other Presidents  think  and  act  and  what  other  clubs'  activities are. He also  advised  that  Mermaid  Beach  seem  to  be  struggling  for  numbers but  at  this  time is  o.k..

After  Bruce  we had  Malcolm who gave us  details of  the  roster  for  the  sizzle  and  highlighted  the need  for  people  not to  alter  the  roster  without  advising  him first. All  allocations  are on  the  website.
Jim    is  looking  for  more  numbers  for  the  Surfers  Race  Day which is on  soon, it’s  a  great  day  so  if  you  require  tickets   contact  Jim or Bruce.
Bill  Waller  gave  a  comprehensive  Almoners report  which  is  reprinted in  this  edition of  Rotarlight.

Silver  Circle  number  14  won  by  Klaus. Raffle  won  by lucky  David. Heads  and  Tails by Kevin  Obrien.

Then  came  the  evening’s  main  event, John  Harding  regaled us  with  some of  his army  stories.
As  you all  know   John  was  commissioned  as  an  officer in  1952 attached  to  a  National  Service  Battalion, (I  was  a  Nasho  for  2 years   so  I know  what  an  easy  job  he  would  have  had). John  had  a  very  distinguished  career  serving  his  country  in  the  U.S.A.  ,Vietnam,Malaya  and  other  postings.  He is  the  holder of  the  AM  and has been  a  wonderful  member  and  past  President of our  club.
If  he  didn’t  join  the  military he  would  have  made  a  great  raconteur.
The stories  were  too long  and involved  for  this  scribe to  give  them  their  proper  justice  and  I  tried  to have  John  précis  by  email  to me  but he  said  he  would  think  about it.
His  talk was  named  “Characters  I  have  met” and  if  these  guys  ran  the  army  then  I don’t  know  how  we  won  anything.  We  went  from  water pistols being  sprayed  on  Brigadiers  legs  in  urinals  to  flying naked chooks being  evacuated  from  aircraft   and  from  there  to  cows in  parachutes  (sometimes if  they had  enough  parachutes otherwise  they  received  a  quick lesson in  flying.) I  shudder  to  think  who  had  to  eat  the  meals that  came  from  the  flying  farmyard.

The  night  was  fairly  spontaneous but  we  had  a lot of  laughs ,learned  a  few  things  and  most  importantly enjoyed  wonderful  fellowship.

WEEKLY LAUGHS
A woman was getting swamped with calls from strangers. A billing service had launched an 800 number that was identical to hers.
When she called to complain, she was told to get a new number. "I've had mine for twenty years," she pleaded. "Couldn't you change yours?"
The company refused, so she said, "Fine. From now on, I'm going to tell everyone who calls that their bill is paid in full."
The company got a new number the next day.

While visiting Annapolis, a lady tourist noticed several students on their hands and knees assessing the courtyard with pencils and clipboards in hand.
"What are they doing?" she asked the tour guide.
"Each year," he replied with a grin, "the upperclassmen ask the freshmen how many bricks it took to finish paving this courtyard."
When they were out of earshot of the freshmen, the curious lady asked the guide: "So, what's the answer?"
The guide replied: "One."

The rain was pouring down. And there standing in front of a big puddle outside the pub, was an old Irishman, drenched, holding a stick with a piece of string dangling in the water.A passer-by stopped and asked, "What are you doing?"
"Fishing" replied the old man....
Feeling sorry for the old man, the gent said, "Come in out of the rain and have a drink with me."
In the warmth of the pub, as they sip their whiskeys, the gentleman cannot resist asking, "So how many have you caught today?"
"You're the eighth" said the old man.

I'm not the easiest guy in the world to get along with. So when our anniversary rolled around, I wanted my wife to know how much I appreciated her tolerating me for the past 20 years. I ordered flowers and told the florist to enclose a card that read, 'Thanks for putting up with me so long.'
When my wife got the delivery, she called me at work.
"Just where do you think you going?" she asked.
"What do you mean?" I said.
She read the card aloud as the florist had written it: "Thanks for putting up with me. So long."

In California over the weekend, a woman gave birth in a Barnes & Noble bookstore. Apparently she did this in the New Releases section.
I thought you were going to say she gave birth in the C-section.

Q: What do you call a cow spying on another cow?
A: A steak out.

Q: What happened when the owl lost his voice?
A: He didn't give a hoot.
