Secretary's Corner - Bob Jordan
  1. Myself, Noel Hodges and John  Monks  met with GCCC representatives at the Hub on Wednesday  morning. The meeting, which was to discuss the club’s request for a renewal of our lease seemed to go very  successfully. The council representatives  were complimentary of the progress and obvious work put into the Hub by the club and it’s supporters. The meeting lasted approximately one hour and was not related to the building itself --- a building inspection will be done at a later date. We do not anticipate a decision on the renewal before Christmas.

I was born in Kyogle, just over the border in NSW. I spent my early years on a Dairy Farm where I milked cows before and after school. I rode a horse to my primary school at Horseshoe Creek and caught a bus to my high School at Kyogle , where I excelled in Sport.

After I left school in 1954 I joined The Commercial Banking Company of Sydney Limited , Australia’s second oldest Bank.  I spent 3 years in the Kyogle Branch apart from a stint in National Service.I was transferred around N.S.W including 3 years at Bowraville (before the murders) where I worked with Bob Jordan’s  father in law .
I eventually was transferred to Brisbane Office where I met Margaret my wife of 52 years and we have 3 wonderful children , Susan, David and Jennifer.

Our first transfer as a married couple was to Quilpie, fulfilling my first boss’s prediction that I would go far in the Bank!! After 3 long summers at Quilpie I was transferred back to civilisation in Murwillumbah . I was promoted to Manager at Sarina then to Maryborough and finally Isle of Capri. In the meantime the NAB took over the CBC which was not pleasant and I decided to resign from the Bank and stay on the Gold Coast

Since leaving the Bank I have had several part time jobs but probably my biggest claim to fame was my job as a Returning Officer from 1992 to my last Job as R.O for the 2008 GCCC elections.Along side my part time jobs I also assisted Margaret in her wedding Cake business which eventually became to big to handle

I joined Rotary in 1978 at Sarina and have spent time at Maryborough Club, Surfers Paradise Club and finally Broadbeach Club. My claim to fame at this club is being chairman of the scooter committee with some success.

NO PERSONAL PRIVILEGES

Frequently friends ask whether Rotarians receive special business benefits from their Rotary membership. Should Rotarians expect a special discount or some preferential service just because they are dealing with a fellow Rotarian? The answer is clearly "no." The Rotary Manual of Procedure expressly states the Rotary position on this matter. The policy, originally approved by the R.I. Board of Directors in 1933, is that in business and professional relations "a Rotarian should not expect, and far less should he/she ask for, more consideration or advantages from a fellow Rotarian than the latter would give to any other business or professional associate with whom he/she has business relations. " Over 50 years ago the concept was expressed that "true friends demand nothing of one another, and any abuse of the confidence of friendship for profit is foreign to the spirit of Rotary." On the other hand, if new or increased business comes as the natural result of friendship created in Rotary, it is the same normal development which takes place outside of Rotary as well as inside, so it is not an infringement on the ethics of Rotary membership. It is important to remember that the primary purpose of Rotary membership is to provide each member with a unique opportunity to serve others, and membership is not intended as a means for personal profit or special privileges.

The Rotary Foundation Weekly
WHAT IS “EVERY ROTARIAN, EVERY YEAR” ALL ABOUT?
This initiative by the Board of Trustees of The Rotary Foundation: encourages EVERY ROTARIAN to participate in a Foundation program that truly makes a difference in the world each and EVERY YEAR, and encourages EVERY ROTARIAN to contribute to the Foundation’s Annual Fund at any amount which they are able, EVERY YEAR.
Clubs where every member contributes some amount to the Foundation and the overall annual per capita is US$100 receive a  special Foundation. There is also a banner for clubs where every member contributes at least US$100 per year. In this, the centenary year of The Rotary Foundation, there is a special challenge to clubs to achieve 100% of members personally contributing at least US$26.50 - the amount of Arch Klumph's initial contribution to start the Foundation. Our club goal this year is to contribute US$100 per member and for each member to personally contribute US$26.50 and this will be our focus in November which is Foundation Month.

IF YOU ARE A PART OF THE “EVERY ROTARIAN, EVERY YEAR” INITIATIVE I PERSONALLY THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT OF THE ROTARY FOUNDATION AND ITS WORK "DOING GOOD IN THE WORLD"

FROM LAST WEEK'S MEETING - 04 OCTOBER 2016
(Scribe: Graham Sivyer))

Sergeant: Noel Hodges introduced President Bruce who welcomed members & guests, Agnes Adorjan and Dennis Stevenson.
In all the excitement, Sergeant Noel overlooked calling on Bob Jordan to propose the toast (Bob had prepared to toast club members of thirty years standing and their valuable contribution to the club)
Comments/Announcements:  Last weekend car boot sale – 97 cars involved. Recent overseas trips – Noel H to Vanuatu - ‘the beer was expensive’.
Grahame Werrell – ‘Edinburgh Tattoo was spectacular’, Nancy Smith visited Tanzania and presented school children with soccer balls. [Many very happy kids], John Curr visited northern Canada and logged 16 polar bears. [at a distance]
Noel delivered a few trivia facts relating to ‘happenings on this day’. Included: The first powered air flight by the Wright brothers in 1905, Sputnik launched in 1957 and the $2 note being replaced by the $2 coin in 1988.
Ray Milton reminded members of next Tuesday’s [11th  October 2016] Gold Coast Police Officer of the Year awards.
Please transfer $65 PP for tickets to the Broadbeach Rotary account as there will be no one on the door to collect. [Project account – BSB 034637  AC. 201526]
Pauline will be selling raffle tickets on the night. Proceeds go to PYCY.
Don’t forget ‘Octoberfest’ on the 25th October.
Silver Circle winner Les Bulluss
Sergeant’s session: Bunyips Grahame Werrell and Neil Baldwin.  Fined were those who backed the Storm and those who backed the Sharks!!
Raffle winner: Peter Dimond and H and T winner Robyn Brown.

Guest Speaker: Dennis Stevenson: ‘Your coach to a new life’.        Introduced by Alain Charles.
Dennis is a business and marketing consultant, motivational speaker, community trainer and life coach. Though he has no income, assets or savings, to live his belief Dennis doesn’t charge anyone – for anything. This includes his talks, workshops and professional consultations. He enjoys the idea of helping create communities with a gift economy, freely helping and sharing with each other without ever creating an obligation for anyone to give back.
In 2009 for Christmas, Dennis borrowed an empty Gold Coast shop for a week, named it ‘Spirit of Christmas’ and with community involvement and no cost, gave away thousands of presents to help see no one went without. In 2012, his fourth year, he gave away over 11,000 presents. In 2013, 2014 and 2015 others opened shops in Victoria and Queensland.

Meeting closed by President Bruce thanking everyone for their input and looking forward to the Police Officer of the Year Awards next week.
