Australia Day event at Tunstall Park – 26 January 2023
from Gabby
images from Gabby and Peter Koens
Whilst the event was quieter than what Council expected with up to 5,000 attending, the water bottles we provided were really popular – we handed out around 1,100 of the 1,500 I ordered.  The bottles complimented the water station provided by council very well.

Many thanks to Ian A, Judith, Rob J, Peter K, Janette E, Ian E and Milan for assisting at the event…also thanks to Phil S (a friend of Rotary) for transporting the boxes of water bottles to the event in the Eastern Emergency Relief Network van and to Ian A and Peter K for dropping boxes back to Gabby’s place after the event.  Ben S, Susan S and Michael Sukkar were also in attendance but in more of an official capacity.

One of the productive outcomes of events such as this is we continue to build a great relationship with the City of Whitehorse and with Lions Nunawading.

Our Meeting Last Wednesday
GENEALOGY
Gabby Knaepple
Gabby spoke about Genealogy, and has very obligingly
sent me an overview of her talk which I have presented below.

I initially became interested in family history because my Grandmother kept a Family Bible that recorded names/dates for ancestors and she also held the history/stories.

There was an Italian name in our tree – we wanted to find out where they came from.

Books in Homes
We received formal Grant approval from District Governor Ken regarding our application for Books in Homes.
Once the activity is completed and a report submitted, we will receive payment of $2,500 in grant monies.

EERN Truck
Delivery of the new Eastern Emergency Relief Network truck is now expected to be 13 February which is about 6 weeks earlier than we thought.  Last year, RC of Nunawading board agreed to contribute $10,000 to the purchase.  The truck will have Rotary branding on it.       NB. Gabby and Ian abstained from voting to avoid a conflict of interest.

Thank you Bounty Printing....
Judith acknowledged the great service from Bounty Printing in Heatherdale Rd.  We were referred to them by Neil I.  They do a lot of Rotary stuff and did not charge us for the Australia Day stickers.

.......a couple of jokes received recently

...and this article from The Age caught my eye
Affect or effect; imply or infer: Are you getting it right? By David Astle

This excerpt in particular :

....Meanwhile, arses – the word – is spelled by the alternate letters of barristers,
which isn’t to suggest arse is an alternative label for the court performer.
That would be libel (defamatory remark via writing), or slander – if you said as much.
