Next Week's Meeting - October 2 we have Tracey Cooper as our Guest Speaker. It's an open meeting, so please invite your family, friends and colleagues.

Tracey will be our guest speaker for our second monthly "feature speaker meeting",  and will follow on from Garry Crittenden in speaking about the Tourism Industry on the Mornington Peninsula. It's come a long way from foreshore based camping in summer school holidays to being a key region in Victoria's highly successful tourism strategy.  What has driven this growth? How successful has it been for local residents and businesses ? And where is it heading ?

Tracey is Executive Chair person of Visit Mornington Peninsula (previously Mornington Peninsula Tourism Board ) and has overall responsibility for the future of the tourism industry on the Peninsula.  She has been in that role for 7 years and was previously adviser to the Victorian Tourism Minister. There is no one better credentialed to speak on this topic.

Our Meeting Last Week enjoyed Ian Stevenson talking about Fossil Beach

Ian is the convenor of the Fossil Beach Interest Group and was accompanied by his wife Jenny. It was great to have some other guests there with an interest in this topic including Meredith Horton. Good to have Hannah at another meeting,  and welcome again to Joe Siragusa who has applied for membership,  and also Judy Seger as a first time guest interested in joining.

Ian, now retired,  was only the second Environmental Officer appointed by a Council in Australia and has had a long involvement and passion for many environmental matters on the Peninsula including many years as a Board member of the Dolphin Research Institute,  and the Westernport Biosphere. He has been deeply involved in mangrove revegetation in Westernport and of course has led the interest in Fossil Beach.

Ian spoke about the long term geological history of the bay, going back 20 million years, and how the fossil layer, visible in the intertidal range at Fossil beach,  extends underground across the bay. He also outlined the unsuccessful attempt to establish a cement works there in the second half of the 19th century and replace Melbourne's dependence on imported cement. In our generation there has been extensive archaeological interest in the site, a strong affiliation with the Arts community  and Ian's interest group who have led the rehabilitation of the area with Mornington Peninsula Shire Council. The presentation must have been good - about half the members present signed up to the Fossil Beach Interest Group on the night !

For those who missed the night, or whose interest was sparked,  Fossil Beach is a great place to visit, especially with the recently unveiled interpretative signage. It's best accessed from near the end of Benton's Road (Dava Hotel) on the Esplanade.
