David Spitteler from the Asylum Seekers Centre in Dandenong was our guest speaker.

It is a voluntary service aiding asylum seekers and refugees in the Dandenong and Casey area.  The centre supports about 400 people of which 80% are Muslim.  Many of the people they assist come from Iran and Myanmar which was Burma.

There are detailed criteria that must be satisfied before people can gain refugee status.  Most of the people they assist are fleeing persecution from their home country. Some of the people they have assisted now work in the centre supporting others.

David, assisted by his wife Evonne answered many questions and told moving stories of people in detention centres and their struggles to live in a new country.  An interesting talk about a difficult subject.
