The Rotary Club of Berwick is to continue the work started by the Berwick & District Benevolent Society
In recognition of the work done by the Berwick & District Benevolent Society over its 56 years of operation, the City of Casey held a Mayoral Morning Tea on 1st June at which Certificates of Appreciation were awarded to the outgoing committee members. Mayor Cr Mick Morland congratulated the Society acknowledging the great work that they had done for the community over such a long time.

Sue Magee, the Manager of the CISS, added that in addition to being instrumental in forming the CISS and being represented on its’ Board, the Society had contributed over $250,000 over the years to support the organisation and it was a sad occasion to see the existing members retire.  However, she looked forward to working with the Rotary Club of Berwick to ensure the ongoing provision of service to the community.

In response, Bert Rae advised that the Berwick & District Benevolent Society was formed 56 years ago by his mother and father. He indicated that in addition to providing a range of support services to the community, the Society was also instrumental in forming the Casey North Information & Support Services (CISS) and the Berwick Opportunity Shop.  Bert went on to thank the City of Casey for its support and also acknowledged the financial support provided to the Society by the Cardinia Presbyterian Church over the years.

Sadly, due to their advancing years, the present committee are unable to continue the distribution of food and other goods to the disadvantaged members of the Berwick community.  However, the Rotary Club of Berwick has agreed to continue their good work under its auspices and to continue using the Berwick & District Benevolent Society name.
