PRESIDENT JEN HOFFMAN started the meeting with a quick lesson on how Veteran’s Day came about. It started on the 11th Day, at the 11th Hour, of the 11th Month in 1918 with a temporary cessation of fighting between the Allied Nations and Germany and is regarded as the end of the “war to end all wars.” Officially, it became Veteran’s Day in 1954 under President Eisenhower.

SARA GAAR EHRENS, who loves fishing in Alaska on a (rare) beautiful day, led the pledge and song.

CLIFF BOWMAN reviewed other aspects of Veteran’s Day and reminded us all that we can defend our freedom by being involved in our community and doing the great things that Rotarians do.

We split for fellowship and lunch and also voted for the 2021-2023 Board of Directors.

JON WANG offered the introduction to our Mystery Guest Speaker and let us know that we were in for a 4 Way Educational Experience.  JON then introduced PHIL SILVERS. PHIL SILVERS started in the Rotary Club of Tucson in 1986. He immediately became involved in the Youth Exchange Program.  During the following years, PHIL became more involved and at a higher level within the Rotary of Tucson, The District and Rotary International. He was the RCOT President in 1994, the District Governor in 1998 and part of the Rotary International Board of Directors from 2008 – 2010. PHIL reminded us that there isn’t a 5th rule on the 4 Way Test, but if there was, it would be about lasting joy.

Sergeant at Arms GARY OLSEN then introduced BRUCE JACOBS who reminded us about the mixer at Proof in St. Philip’s Plaza, next Wednesday, November 18th and that we needed to RSVP by this Friday. CHAR HARRIS then showed us a list of bicycling riders who are still raising money to End Polio. Ask CHAR who you can support.  PRESIDENT JEN reminded us to bring handbags for the Handbags for Hope campaign and that we could use the personal items that go inside them as well.
BOB SHAFF then shared a Member Spotlight about GORDON GRAHAM. It was great to have GORDON at the meeting with us along with his daughter. GORDON’s daughter told us that he is the most positive person ever and a great Dad. GORDON offered a few words and is grateful for his freedom and our service members who protect it.

PHIL GUTT presented the 2021-2023 Board members: JOE DANISZEWSKI, JEANNE FLOWER and ROB LAMASTER.

PRESIDENT JEN ended the meeting with a toast and we were on our way.
