President CHUCK opened the meeting and ANN LANCERO gave the inspiration with a quote from Albert Schweitzer: “The only ones among you who will be really happy are those who will have sought and found how to serve”. Everyone sends their best wishes to MARSHALL DENNINGTON to get well soon!

MIKE DALTON led us in the pledge and song, “God Bless America”, accompanied by impresario GARY HIRSCH on the piano. RICHARD KELEMAN introduced our guests and visiting Rotarians. We had four Birthday Rotarians:

  • RICHARD KELEMAN is a graduate of Catalina High School who enjoys bass fishing competitions both locally and nationally. RICHARD donated to the Scholarship fund to celebrate his birthday.
  • PAT PATTON is a returning member who graduated from a whole slew of Texas schools. Pat thanked his sponsor PAT LENNON and donated to the Scholarship Fund.
  • TOM ELITHARP is a graduate of Iowa state who enjoys woodworking, avoiding the first 100-degree day in Tucson and the first snowstorm in Iowa.TOM donated to his Paul Harris.
  • LEA MARQUEZ PETERSON is an honorary member and Former President/ CEO, Tucson Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. LEA is a fourth generation Arizonan from Morenci and Clifton. She thanked her sponsor Past President ELLIE PATTERSON and looks forward to having more time for things like Rotary!LEA donated to the Scholarship Fund.
President CHUCK introduced our newest member STEVE MARTEN (almost spelled it the other way…)  STEVE is a former naval intelligence officer, a recent MBA recipient, and an avid Rotarian who enjoys “making friends and doing good”.

The fearless duo of President Elect BOB LOGAN and Past President CHARLOTTE HARRIS presented Paul Harris pins to the following persons:

Josh Tor (Rabbi STEPHANIE AARON’s son-in-law).  According to Rabbi STEPHANIE, Josh is a chef, triathlete, and all-around renaissance man who also mows his own lawn.  This is Rabbi STEPHANIE’S eighth or ninth Paul Harris!
KEITH WEIGAND is also a renaissance man of sorts, having bartended at the Pioneer Hotel and Smuggler’s Inn.  KEITH’s son narrowly avoided a ticket for driving in the carpool lane in Phoenix by pointing out that the deceased person he was transporting was still a person. MARGARET HIGGINS has studied, taught, and traveled all over the world, developing her own four-way test for the importance of Rotary along the way. MARGARET received her Paul Harris plus 2 along with a set of maps of the USA to help her find her way home.

Sergeant at Arms BOBBY LARSON was joined by his “brother from another mother” Past President DAVE GALLAHER with an auction of UA basketball tickets donated by CHRIS EDWARDS.  We also had recognition of CHRIS MOONEY who participated in the Chris Rock Fundraiser and was photographed with his actual brother.  There was no auction, and we had the following announcements:

FONDA INSLEY reminded us about the upcoming Sweetheart Dinner on Friday, 2/8/19 at the Skyline Country Club – bring photos of your significant other to VICKIE JACOBS!
GARY HIRSH and DARRELL STEWART announced more astounding results from the Ride to End Polio:  $5.7 Million this year for a total to date of $53.5 Million!!!
JO DeCHATELET gave an excellent and concise presentation on the advantages of making Rotary Foundation donations from an IRA and offered a Happy Jackson for LYUDA EISEMAN who recently became a shareholder at Beach Fleishman.
CLIFF BOWMAN had a Happy Jackson to announce the recent marriage of member LIZ BAKER to his son, making her LIZ BAKER BOWMAN.  Congratulations to everyone!
DOT KRET also had a Happy Jackson to announce a new Archive Advantage service to scan Super 8 Movies.  Archive Advantage provides job opportunities for persons who are disabled or may have barriers to employment.

CHRISTOPHER SHIREMAN introduced our speaker L. Roderick Anderson, MD. Dr. Anderson is a Neurologist with Western Neuro and he spoke about the causes, symptoms and preventive measures related to stroke. Dr. Anderson related that stroke is now the 5th leading cause of death but is prevalent in women over 80 years of age. Some of the leading risk factors include high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, and atrial fibrillation. (Thankfully, moderate drinking may help reduce risk factors – a fact that met with a round of applause.)  Thank you, Dr. Anderson for an informative presentation.  Dr. Anderson signed a book for our lending library: “La Princesa and the Pea”.

President CHUCK adjourned the meeting with a quote from Bill Gates: “Treatment without prevention is simply unsustainable.”
