The Monthly Newsletter of Rotary District 6250

June Edition

Important Note: Deadline for district newsletter submissions is the 25th of each month.
The newsletter will be distributed by the first full week of the month.

District Governor's Message

Hello Rotarians!  I hope your last 12 months have gone as quickly – and as happily – as mine have.

So, June is the last month of the Rotary year.  By the time you read this, we will be happily remembering a fun and productive district conference.  If you didn’t make it – make next year’s a “must go”.  You will have your eyes opened to what Rotary is all about and have fun meeting members from around the District.

June is Rotary Fellowships month.  Did you know there is a fellowship of yachting Rotarians?  I don’t know anyone with a yacht, but maybe you do.  There are actually 79 different Rotary Fellowships – uniting members with interests in common.  Everything from 4x4 vehicles, to Old and Rare Books, to Chess, Photography, Tennis, Stamps, Cycling, Scouting, Golf – you can check out the rest on the RI website.  All a way to have fun, and do more good in the world, with fellow Rotarians.

June is also the month when we wrap up the year.  It’s our December.  Since December is the time when we think about making our annual charitable gifts, be aware that June is the month we want you to finish your charitable giving to the Rotary Foundation for this Rotary year.  Please get your checks to your club this week.  Club, get your checks to the Rotary Foundation as early as possible.  Don’t wait until the last few days of June, and then express mail a check so it’s arriving on June 29th.  It may not make the deadline!

Finally, I close with this reflection:  Our theme this year was “Be the Inspiration”.  I frankly think that’s one of the best themes in recent years, and I hope you adopt it as a personal credo.  One person can be the inspiration for their family, a friend, a Rotary Club, or a whole nation!  I find it a very healthy habit to stop and think every so often, about who my inspirations are  - and why.  And to think about what I am doing, and whether I might do a better job of being someone else’s inspiration.  One of my inspirational friends like so say “Do what you can, where you are, with what you have.”  I have to thank several hundred fellow Rotarians for being inspiring to me this past year, so the list is too long to print.  I am happy that I end my year with the district at least a little healthier in some ways, and a little more inspired.  I know we still have challenges, and I pledge to keep doing what I can to meet them.  But more importantly, I hope you continue to be inspired by the incredible good works we help to do - to make our clubs, our communities and our world a better place.

With Rotary pride,

Bill Hoel

Meet our Newest Global Grant Scholar - Jake Poeping

Jake is originally from Long Lake, Minnesota, but is a proud Wisconsin Badger at heart. Since graduating from UW-Madison with a degree in Biology and African Studies, Jake's passion for public health has taken him across the globe. He has conducted research on injecting drug use in India, facilitated psychosocial support groups for HIV+ adolescents in Tanzania, taught English and guest lectured for courses on international development, and is currently supporting a project to increase access to modern contraception and reproductive health services in Laos. Now, he finds himself yearning for higher education, and plans to study for a Masters in Public Health for Development at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine next year! In his free time, Jake enjoys rock climbing, learning languages, and traveling the world in search of the best cup of coffee. He is thrilled to join the Rotary community as a Global Grant Scholar and is looking forward to an exciting and impactful year in London!

RI News

The Rotarian Magazine

The Rotarian Magazine is our link to the greater Rotary world. The pictures and stories tell us of the wonderful work that is being done, in and through Rotary, to make the world a better, safer and a more peaceful place…all because we are advancing the key elements of social justice, health projects, and educational opportunity and alleviating the dire effects of poverty.

A person is not free if they are hungry. A man is not free when he has to watch his children die because of the lack of clean water or adequate food. A mother will not be free if her sick child cannot receive medical care and when people are not free they will seek social justice even if it means going to war to achieve it.

Our magazine, paid for in our RI dues, is not junk mail. It makes you and me “literate” in the great story of Rotary. Read it. Share it with others. Drop it off in a public area where literature is offered, a dentist's reception area, the waiting room at your local hospital or when you go to your accountant's office to pick up your tax filings. Plant the seeds of Rotary by sharing our great story.
