GOVERNOR DAVE'S MESSAGE FOR JULY 2015

I cannot believe it is already the middle of July! Why can’t January, February or March go by this quickly? It has been a GREAT start of this Rotary year! We started our “Official Visits” right out of the gate and visited my home club Boston #7. It was nice to start our visits with them. We had a great time at our new meeting location at Fisher College in the Back Bay. President Shiela Lally is leading our club with some aggressive changes that will surely pay dividends within our community!

On July 2, we traveled up to Rockport and met with President Maryanne Bland and her team. It was Rockport's Service Club monthly meeting and this model is very interesting! In attendance that evening were several potential members! What a great concept to attract new members into our organization!

We know summer is a slow time. After all, don’t we deserve a laid-back and relaxed environment after this past winter? Well, someone should tell this to the Wakefield Club!  It is no surprise this club continues to support Rotary and promote the Objective of Rotary! Recently, the Wakefield PD lost their police dog Leo, a tremendous loss to Wakefield. The club is determined and focused to raise money to purchase and train a new police dog to support the K9 unit.

Our new District Governor Noninee Dave Gardner’s home club of Stoneham is such an inspiration for our youth program.  President Amy Palmerino, now in her second consecutive term as President, is once again committed to showcase youth development in Stoneham! Recently, the club formed a new Interact Club and this community will see, in the very near future, what strength it is has in the young leaders!

President Chris Baker is one amazing young leader himself. Chris led an inspirational and motivated round table this past Tuesday evening at the Downtown Boston Evening Club. In a beautiful area of Boston, in the shadow of the Golden Dome of the State House, the Downtown Boston Rotary Club has created a model to attract the younger population of their community and to put service at the forefront of Boston.

I also want to thank President Mike Burns for asking me to introduce two members of the great Wilmington Rotary this past Wednesday. I quickly agreed, figuring it would be two NEW members and say a few words. Well, I was extremely honored to introduce two not-so-new members that are celebrating 63 and 64 years of perfect attendance! Congrats to Ray Fitch and Fred Cain for their commitment to service in Wilmington Rotary! Such an inspiration!

I remember as a kid, driving out to Prince Pizza on Rte 1 in Saugus many times. I also remember telling my grandmother we were going to the “Leaning Tower of Pizza”! Great memories. They all came back this past Thursday as President Casey Lyons welcomed us to this really fun and engaged club! There is something special about friends sitting around eating really good food and discussing the needs of their community. Saugus Rotary will surely continue on improving their community needs and look into some larger district-funded grants.

Not only did we have great club visits, we also attended a few District meetings.  I am so excited to be part of a wonderful team. We all should!  The Homelessness & Hunger initiative steering committee met recently at the great facility, The Greater Boston Food Bank, to focus on what we can do as Rotarians to improve our communities. Stay tuned for more updates. The District Membership Committee met this past week and they have great plans to increase our membership. We are focused on some new directives including retention, recruiting and collaboration to strengthen membership in D7930. This is very exciting! Lastly, the newly formed Suffolk County Rotary Task Force met in Roslindale this week to begin our aggressive campaign to focus Rotary awareness, collaboration, and public image in Suffolk County. Many great ideas came out of this initial meeting and we are ready to begin, “telling our Rotary story” in Suffolk County!

It is an incredible honor for me to stand alongside each of you as we continue to serve Rotary and to continue to make a difference in our communities. Let us remember that it is our time to “Be a Gift to the World”!

HOMELESSNESS & HUNGER COMMITTEE DEVELOPS FOCUS

On Tuesday, July 7th, the Homelessness and Hunger Steering Committee held its first meeting. The purpose of the meeting was to determine the committee’s ideas on the focus of the District 7930 Homelessness and Hunger Initiative.

The District Governor track, District Governor Dave Manzi, District Governor-Elect Sheryl Meehan and District Governor Nominee Dave Gardner have made a minimum of a three year commitment to the initiative. Having this commitment from the three of them allows the committee to actually accomplish something meaningful, sustaining, and impactful and something that could be an example to Rotary Districts throughout the United States, and perhaps the world.

After an amazing tour of the Greater Boston Food Bank, led by Kendra Bird, RD, LDN, Director of Distribution, Services and Nutrition and her staff, the committee joined together to develop a consensus of what it is that Rotary can do to assist in the alleviation of homelessness and hunger in District 7930. The Committee consists of the Governor track, Committee Chair Bob Wood, Joan Arsenault from Ipswich, Malden’s Dave Hart, Sr. Leonore Coan of Ipswich, Corey Jackson and Alyse Barbash from Peabody, Julie LaFontaine from Gloucester, Andy Maddox of Rockport, Greater Boston Food Bank Representative Kendra Bird, and Daniel Weir from Topsfield, Boxford and Middleton. “Why them?” you ask. Because the majority of the participants are either experts in the fields, or have experienced either homelessness or hunger at some stage of their lives. Also on the committee, but not present are Elizabeth Keely from Boston # 7 and Sue Gabriel of Beverly.

It was determined at the April 1st Homelessness and Hunger Initiative Summit, as well as at this meeting, that, at first, the focus of the Initiative should be the education of the Rotarians in our District. Out of the discussion of this came the following mission statement:

CHELSEA ROTARY SPONSORS 20 STUDENTS AT CAMP ROTARY

This summer, the Chelsea Rotary Club is sponsoring 20 lucky Chelsea students between ages 7 and 15 to an all expense paid week of overnight camp at Camp Rotary in Boxford, MA. DISTRICT 7930'S ROTOPLAST CEBU CITY MISSION

A special thank you to all the clubs and our District Governor David Manzi for supporting our district's 10th Rotaplast Mission to Cebu City, Philippines from October 4th to the 18th.

Our current mission is in memory of Dr. Vince Rubin, a gifted surgeon, Rotarian past president, member of the North Andover and Chelsea Rotary Clubs, Paul Harris Fellow. Vince was a humanitarian and went on 9 Rotaplast Missions.

Rotaplast International is a nonprofit organization, founded in 1992 which provides free reconstructive surgeries and treatments to underprivileged children with cleft lip and palate deformities and, in some locations, burn treatments and other birth defects that can be corrected with plastic surgery.

A Rotaplast team consists of plastic surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, pediatricians as well as nonmedical volunteers. All medical equipment supplies are shipped with the team,  along with a handmade quilt for each patient.

Our goal is to perform 150 surgical procedures bringing the total surgeries sponsored by District 7930 to 1000. We have made a real difference in the lives of so many children by restoring their dignity, the ability to breathe, swallow, eat, speak normally and smile usually for the first time in their lives. This will allow them to be educated and be part of their communities without being shunned.
