Build Your Brand Through Rotary
If you own or manage  a business, wouldn't it be nice to grow your business within the Rotary community. Well, now you can through a district based advertising program. If you are looking for purchasing a product or service from a reputable company, wouldn't it make sense to find a Rotarian to do business with? Clearly, the Four Way Test provides the basis for a mutually beneficial relationship between two parties.

The district is introducing a multi-layered program where Rotarians can advertise in the district directory, on the district website and create a presence in an online business directory. You will have the option of advertising in any one or more, although at the pricing offered it just might make sense to participate completely. But, you will be the judge of that.

To help defray the cost of the district directory, we are introducing a yellow page section with multiple options that range from $25 (line listing with phone number) to a $200 full page ad.

Want more dynamic advertising, consider an entry into the NEW online directory, starting at $9.99 per month or $99.99 annually, plus a $49 setup fee to create your business card sized ad. From there you can add more information about your company, both text and graphics as well as special offers. Visitors will be able to connect with you through social media, follow a link to your website, call you or send you an email. If they truly appreciate you and your company, they can make a recommendation. Once set up, you will be able to update your information or special offers at your convenience.

Finally, we will be offering the ability to sponsor the website and eBulletins through advertising. With readership growing, we now feel that it would be advantageous for Rotarians to invest in this option. We are working out the details for this option and will be able to report to you shortly.

Space Still Available for RYLA Sophomores and Juniors
District 7930's annual RYLA weekend will be held on June 3-5, 2016, at Camp Rotary in Boxford. This is a spectacular weekend, where 80 high school sophomores and juniors from all over the District come together to learn leadership skills. Facilitating the weekend are a hand-picked group of students from last year's RYLA and a team of Rotarians.

District clubs may sponsor up to five students from their community. The cost to sponsor a student is $150. This covers the program, housing and food.

There are still spaces available for this year's RYLA. If your club hasn't submitted applications yet, please consider participating. This is an amazing program.

For information about RYLA, contact Rotarians Jim Babbin, Evan Diamond, Andy Maddox, Peter Majane, Tracy Arabian, Julie Geary, Mike McLaughlin, or Dave Gardner. All have several years of RYLA experience and can answer your questions.

Rotary Day at Fenway with the Red Hot Red Sox
After a weekend sweep of the Yankees, the Red Sox look like they are in high gear! The bats are blazing and pitching is starting to improve. Now that we are officially in first place, it is time to introduce our Rotary Day at Fenway.

On July 8th, we have reserved 280 seats in the right field grandstands to hopefully witness a win over the Tampa Bay Rays. Joining us will be 50 plus members of the Ipswich Rotary Club and their twin club from Ipswich, England. That leaves about 230 seats for Rotarians, family and friends. This will be a gorgeous night, not guaranteed, but being their with so many incredible people will certainly be amazing.

Rotary International Council on Legislation Report
Ingrid Brown, the elected representative from D7930  recently attended the 2016 Council on Legislation in Chicago. She is proud to report that the 2016 Council on Legislation may well be remembered as one of the most progressive in Rotary history!

The Council is an essential element of Rotary’s governance. Every three years, members from all the 534 districts around the world gather in Chicago to consider and vote on proposed changes to policies that govern the organization and its member clubs. Measures that are adopted take effect July 1, 2016.

Not only did this Council grant clubs more freedom in determining their meeting schedule, allowing clubs to decide to vary their meeting times, whether to meet online or in person, and when to cancel a meeting, as long as they meet at least twice a month, but also allowing flexibility in choosing their membership rules and requirements.

The Council also approved an increase in per capita dues of $4 a year for three years. The increase will be used to enhance Rotary’s website, improve online tools, and add programs and services to help clubs increase membership. The dues increase was based on a five-year financial forecast that predicted that is Rotary didn’t either raise dues or make drastic cuts, its reserves would dip below mandated levels by 2020. As RI Vice-President Greg Podd put it, “We are at a moment in time when we must think beyond the status quo. We must think about our future.”

Also because of this Council’s decisions:
  • A Council on Resolutions will meet annually online to consider resolutions – recommendations to the RI Board. The Council on Resolutions will free the Council on Legislation to concentrate on enactments – changes to Rotary’s governing documents.
  • Rotaractors will be allowed to become members of Rotary Clubs while still in Rotaract. Too few Rotaractors join Rotary, and it’s hoped that giving them more options will boost the members of qualified young leaders in Rotary.
  • The distinction between e-clubs and traditional clubs will be eliminated, now that clubs have been given more flexibility.
  • The reference to “admission fees” will be removed from the bylaws, as the words do not advance a modern image of Rotary.
  • A Standing Committee on membership was established, in recognition that membership is a top priority of the organization, and polio was reaffirmed to be a goal of the highest order.
The global aspect of the Council is inspiring, you really have the opportunity to get out of your “district comfort zone thinking”, and broaden your appreciation of the rest of the Rotary world. Ingrid thanks you for the privilege of, once again, representing D7930.
Austin Students Tell Reading about Their Trip to Peru
Students and faculty from Austin Prep spoke to the Reading Rotary on May 2 about their service trip to rural Peru. AP students, Pedro, Kate and Crystal were our Speakers. They were among 18 total students on a trip this February who dedicated their off time to help those in need. They were accompanied by two AP faculty members, including Reading Rotarian Michael McLaughlin, Head of Austin Prep Middle School.

They traveled to the Sacred Valley of the Incas near Cusco and Machu Picchu. They stayed with host families and preformed community service, including painting classrooms in the Sacred Heart of Jesus School in Urubamba. They mixed bricks the traditional way, with their feet, and repaired walls and improved paths leading to the school in the Andes. They also had the chance to visit the ancient ruins of Machu Picchu and learn salsa dancing.

The student speakers were very impressive as they related how these families in this very remote area had so little, including limited access to sanitary facilities and clean water. The Austin students also interacted with homeless children putting together packs of items and food and distributing them. This was a first time Austin conducted this service trip to Peru, but there are hopes to be able to repeat this service project.
